Ghouls are fabulous creatures that came to modern world from Slavic mythology. Even the baptism of Rus' did not force our ancestors to abandon the traditions and traditions that had existed for many centuries. Echoes of the pagan worldview are actively exploited by directors and writers. What is known about the living dead?

Modern terminology

Ghouls are vampires who, under cover of night, crawl out of the grave in order to quench their thirst. IN different countries there is a point of view about what exactly they eat. In Europe, it is believed that "bloodsuckers" are only interested in the blood of the victim, which they are able to suck out completely.

In Russia, a different version is more popular. Ghouls not only quench their thirst, they are also able to feast on the flesh of the object. The legend says that if the "bloodsucker" was limited to the blood of the victim, leaving the body unharmed, the deceased person himself will turn into a monster.

Pre-Christian traditions

Our ancestors were convinced that ghouls are spirits that send various disasters to humanity. Pestilence, drought, death - all these troubles entail their appearance. It is enough for a living dead to touch a person for him to die of a mysterious illness in the near future.

How did he appear Slavic ghoul after the spread of Christianity in Rus'? This term began to be used in relation to the dead, who were denied a church funeral, burial on consecrated ground.

The following categories of persons had every chance to turn into a monster: drunkards, witches, sinners and heretics. Also, the one who laid hands on himself had a high probability of becoming a "bloodsucker". Ghouls are the revived dead who settle scores with living people. They persecute those whom they considered their enemies to death, trying to drive them to the grave.

Appearance

Slavic ghouls are supernatural creatures with a unique appearance. According to the legends, they have the ability of werewolves. magical powers allow them to turn into an animal or a person, or even become completely invisible to others. Often the ghoul is described as a dead man with iron teeth. Also noteworthy are the eyes of the "bloodsucker", blazing with hellish fire.

Traditions say that when the graves of ghouls were dug up, they found Interesting Facts. For example, the body of the dead man remained intact, was not subject to decay. The arms and legs of the monsters were covered with bite marks, bones were visible here and there. Clothes torn to tatters were also mentioned.

Research

The meaning of the word "ghoul" is a living dead, which already indicates that this creature is fictional. However, for many centuries there were people who tried to prove their reality. In our country, the study of this riddle did not acquire a large-scale character, but in Europe everything was different.

The most serious study of cases of vampirism was carried out in the 18th century. This task was undertaken by the theologian Calmet and the physician Gerard van Swieten, whose services were used by Empress Maria Theresa. Both researchers were unable to prove the reality of the existence of ghouls. However, their treatises are worth reading, as they express completely opposite opinions.

Ghouls and ghouls: what's the difference

Alexander Pushkin believed that both of these terms mean the same thing. supernatural being. WITH light hand famous poet, this delusion has become widespread. The poem "Vurdalak" gained great popularity. However, some researchers believe that the genius was not mistaken, but simply incorrectly spelled the word "werewolf", which characterizes a werewolf.

Ghouls are also called the walking dead, but there is still some difference between them and ghouls. The study of legends and traditions shows that these monsters completely retain their human appearance, as well as a particle of the soul. They do not have the gift of a werewolf, but they are dangerous because they are difficult to recognize. Most often, the victims of ghouls are people for whom they experienced strong emotions during their lifetime, so they satisfy their longing for them.

Monster hunting

The refuge of a ghoul is a grave in which the deceased found his shelter. Our ancestors started hunting monsters from cemeteries. They inspected the graves, noting those where the earth had been dug up. There were other signs that the dead man was periodically selected from his haven.

There were cases when graves were specially dug up, which looked ordinary. This happened if a person who was notorious had recently passed away. His neighbors assumed that it was he who could turn into a ghoul. When a body was discovered, it was turned face down, then an aspen stake was stuck in the back. It was also customary to break the bones in the legs so that the alleged monster would lose the ability to move. In addition, the heads of the dead were cut off, and then they were put at their feet. In some cases, the bodies of potential ghouls were burned.

A few words about protection

The ghoul is a creature that can be fought. Our ancestors did it with the help of the cross, holy water and other religious symbols. It was believed that "bloodsuckers" could be scared away with indecent words, distracted by wheat or rice.

Traditionally, not only themselves, but also their homes were protected from monsters. For example, pieces of iron, previously kept in the fire and laid out on the windowsill, were considered salvation from the invasion of ghouls. Candle-burnt crosses could also be used. Finally, the ghouls did not appear in the house where the dogs that appeared first in the litter lived.

In Rus', ghouls have long been called the revived dead, going hunting under the cover of darkness. Today, the concept of "ghoul" is practically not used, the meaning of this word has passed to the term "vampire", "ghoul".

The demon of the night plunges its victim into a trance and then feeds on their blood. The person bitten by the vampire will be cursed. After death, he is forced to exist in the guise of nosferatu until someone drives a stake through his heart. He goes hunting every day, forcing mere mortals to experience real horror. The silent and elusive killer is always very effective...

vampire legends

Several centuries ago, many representatives of the aristocracy were susceptible to a disease that causes intolerance to sunlight. This greatly contributed to the spread of legends about vampires.

Description .
This mod is under development. It currently adds a Vampire Lair to Solitude, Markarth, Riften, Whiterun, and Windhelm for the player to use as a hideout. In Solitude, the hideout is located between Highspire Manor and Breulin's house. In Markarth, it is in the corner on the right, at the entrance to the city. In Riften it is located in the southeast corner of the city, next to the boarded up gate, in Whiterun it is located in the cemetery, to the right of the Hall of the Dead. The author wanted the Whiterun lair to be located under one of the tombstones, but did not find a way to allow the player to click on the tombstone in order to enter the lair. Therefore, there is an autoload in the middle of 4 tombstones. Just go to the middle of 4 tombstones and enter the lair. The lair in Windhelm is located near the large city gates, in the southern part of the city.

From the localizer

I will not argue, many users are already so fed up with plugins for locations and new houses, and other modders continue to darn them in immense quantities with a wild squeal of “Nurgaliev allowed!”. Not wanting to bear the wrath of the site's audience, I promise to tie up with the translation of locations. But this plugin seemed to me worthy of an exception.

What kind of thing is this? A small cave right below Whiterun, overlooking the Dragon's Reach? Didn't you remember anything? (Vampire Cave right below Skingrad Castle). The entrance is more like a ruined fort or an old gate. There is a farm nearby, in case of famine. You will go in and out to fill with blood in an instant.

Inside, look at the screenshots. Well, in a nutshell, everything is vampire. Chamber with a victim of torture. Soul pentagram. Darkness.

Simple. Cosy. Close to civilization. No quarters with a tennis court and blackjack.
