Paraskeva Friday: What they pray for. Prayers

On November 9, Orthodox Christians celebrate the eve of the day of the Great Martyr Paraskeva, which is also called the Vow to Paraskeva. She is considered an intercessor for women. Therefore, it was they who often made vows to do some difficult work in silence, for example, sewing a shirt in 24 hours.

On this day it is customary to make vows and promises. For fulfilling a vow, Paraskeva makes a wish come true and sends health to loved ones. If misfortune came to the house, you had to make a vow and fulfill it in complete silence, and the next morning go to church and pray.

Great is the merit of the saints before the Lord. Many of them, from an early age, strove for the perfection of the Kingdom of Heaven. Such was Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, whose parents tried to raise their daughter in faith and chastity. Having taken upon herself the martyr's cross, with her spiritual feat she once again testified to the incomparable great power of God, which punished idolaters and their gods.

Great Martyr Paraskeva Friday

Since ancient times, Saint Paraskeva Friday has been a prayer book and intercessor at the Throne of the Lord for the Cossacks of the village of Mityakinskaya.

Reference. The village of Mityakinskaya (now Rostov region) was founded in 1549. It is one of the ancient villages of the Don Cossacks, even older than Rostov-on-Don by 200 years (1749). It was part of the Donetsk District of the Don Army Region. The village has its own coat of arms.

Twice over the last 300 years Saint Paraskeva visited the village of Mityakinskaya and blessed Christians with two miraculous icons.

In honor of Saint Paraskeva, the Mityakinites consecrated the chapel of the Church of the Nativity of Christ, the Paraskevskaya Church and the chapel over the holy spring of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa.

Life of the Great Martyr Paraskeva Pyatnitsa

At the time when the wicked king Diocletian (Roman emperor in 284-305) initiated a persecution of the Christian faith, one noble and beautiful maiden named Paraskeva lived in the city of Iconium. Her parents, Christians, having raised and taught their daughter to keep the holy faith and commandments of God, went to the Lord. They left their blessed daughter a large estate as an inheritance.

Having reached adulthood, the girl Paraskeva began to imitate the faith and deeds of her parents. She did not spend her property on clothes and jewelry, on a luxurious life, but distributed everything she had to those in need: she helped the naked, the hungry, and strangers. Paraskeva did not pay any attention to her suitors who sought marriage with her: she soon became the bride of the one immortal Bridegroom, the Only Begotten Son of God, for whom she lived in holiness and righteousness. She confessed His holy name before people unceasingly, every day, thereby leading them to the knowledge of the truth.

Some of the people believed in our Lord Jesus Christ, while others, unbelievers, slandered the saint. Paraskeva boldly preached the word of God before them and exposed the vanity of faith in soulless idols. Not wanting to listen to accusations from her, the pagans grabbed her and beat her, and then threw her into prison.

At that time, a certain military leader, sent by Emperor Diocletian, came to Iconium with the goal of exterminating all Christians there. The citizens approached him and said:

- Most Serene Commander, in this city there is a girl who believes in the Crucified Christ and preaches Him; She practices magic and with her sorcery she has already turned many people away from making sacrifices to our gods. She never ceases to blaspheme the images of our gods and the autocrat. Having heard the royal order that all those who do not worship the gods should be executed, we seized this girl and kept her in prison.

Having heard this, the military commander ordered Saint Paraskeva to be presented to him for trial. When the holy martyr went to the judgment seat, the Holy Spirit overshadowed her, and her face became bright, so that everyone who looked at her was surprised and said:

- Look! She is not at all depressed by sadness, her face even seems to shine.

When Saint Paraskeva appeared before the judges, the military leader looked at her and, amazed at the beauty and nobility of her face, said to those present:

“You have wrongfully slandered this most beautiful maiden: it is impossible to destroy such sun-like beauty.”

And he said to her:

- Girl, tell us your name!

Saint Paraskeva answered:
- I am a Christian, a servant of Christ.

The military leader said:
“Contemplation of the beauty of your face inclines me to meekness, and the words coming from your lips outrage me to the depths of my soul; I don't want to hear such speeches!

The saint answered:
“Every ruler who carries out a fair trial, hearing the truth, rejoices, but you, having listened to the truth I spoke, became angry.

The tormentor said to this:
“I’m angry because I didn’t receive an answer from you; because I asked you about your name, but you didn’t tell me it.

The saint answered:
“First of all, I had to say my name according to Eternal Life, and then announce my name according to temporary life. So, I said my name according to Eternal Life, that I am a Christian, a servant of Christ, and according to temporary life I was named Paraskeva by my parents, since I was born on Friday (Paraskeva in Greek means “Friday”).

“My parents,” the saint continued, “the sixth day, which is the day of the free and life-giving passions of our Lord Jesus Christ, has always been honored with fasting, prayers and alms. They did this in honor of Christ, believing that out of love for the human race on this day He shed His blood and laid down His life for us on the Cross. God gave them the fruit of their honest marriage - me, His unworthy servant - on that very day that they virtuously revered, remembering the passions of their Master. They were pleased to give me the name by which this day is called, so I am called Paraskeva, I am a participant in the passion of Christ.

The military leader said:
- Stop saying crazy words and make a sacrifice to our gods; then I will take you as my wife, you will become the owner of great wealth, and many will honor you on earth.

To this Saint Paraskeva replied:
“I have a Bridegroom in Heaven, Jesus Christ, and I don’t need another husband.”

Then the commander said:
“I will have mercy on your beauty and spare your youth.”

“Do not spare temporary beauty,” said the saint, “now it blooms, but in the morning it will fade; You better have mercy on yourself, for eternal torment awaits you.

The commander became angry and ordered her clothes to be torn and her to be beaten with harsh sinews. While they were beating the saint, she did not utter a single sound, but silently with her lips and heart she cried out to Christ, asking Him for help in her torment. The military commander, still sparing the beauty of Saint Paraskeva, ordered to stop beating her and began to meekly say:

- Girl! Spare your youth, do not ruin your most beautiful youth! Make a sacrifice to the gods - and you will live and receive great honor from us.

Paraskeva did not answer him anything to this. Then the commander, angry, said:

“Are you not answering me, you evil Christian brat?”

Then the tormentor, becoming terribly angry, ordered Saint Paraskeva to be hanged on a tree and mercilessly torn at her body with iron claws and rubbed her wounds with a hair shirt; her flesh was thus torn to the bone. The ruler, thinking that the martyr would soon die, since she was already barely breathing, took her from the tree and threw her into prison. At midnight, when the martyr lay barely alive and already speechless from cruel wounds, an Angel appeared to her. His shoulders and chest were girded crosswise with a golden belt, and in his hands he held the instruments of Christ’s suffering: a cross, a crown of thorns, a spear, a cane and a lip. The angel told her:

- Maiden, sharer of Christ's passion, arise! I was sent to visit you; To console you in your suffering, I brought the instruments of the passions of our Lord. Look at the honest weapons: the cross and the crown of thorns of the incorruptible Bridegroom; look at the spear that pierced the life-giving ribs, at the reed that wrote the forgiveness of the sins of the whole world, and at the lip that erased Adam’s sin. So, rise up! Christ the Lord heals you!

And so the martyr arose as if from sleep, and the Angel who appeared, approached, wiped all the wounds of the holy martyr with his lip, and her whole body became strong and healthy, and the beauty of her face became even more amazing. She reverently kissed the instruments of Christ's passion and glorified God. After this, the celestial being became invisible.

When morning came, the prison guards came and found Paraskeva healthy and standing in prayer; there was not a single wound on her body. Frightened, they reported this to the commander. The latter ordered her to be brought to him and, seeing her healthy, was surprised: he did not expect that she would survive from terrible wounds. Again amazed at her extraordinary beauty, he said:

- Paraskeva, you see how our gods spared your beauty and preserved you, giving you life.

The saint said to this:
- O commander, show me those who gave me life!

The commander sent her to the temple of his gods to look at their idols. The idol priests and a multitude of people also went with her; everyone thought that Paraskeva wanted to worship idols. When they entered the temple, in which there were many idols, Paraskeva mentally prayed to the One True God who dwells in the highest and, grabbing the leg of the idol of Apollo, said:

“I say to you, the soulless one, and to the corruptible idols with you: this is what my Lord Jesus Christ commands you—all of you fall to the ground and turn to dust.”

And so, according to the word of the saint, all the idols fell and crumbled. Then everyone ran out of the idol temple and began to cry:

- Great is the Christian God!

The wicked priests, seeing the destruction and death of their idols, came to the military leader and, crying, told him:

- Warlord! We told you: “Death this sorceress, since she deceives the people,” but you did not listen to us, and so she crushed all our gods with her sorcery.

Filled with rage, the military commander angrily began to interrogate Saint Paraskeva:

- What magic did you use to do this?

The saint answered:
“With the name of our Lord Jesus Christ on my lips, I entered the temple of your gods and prayed to my Lord: “Appear to me, my Savior, You who gave me life.” And so my Lord and my God Himself appeared to me, and your gods, as soon as they saw Him, trembled with fear and, falling to the ground, broke, showing that if they cannot help themselves, then how will they help others!

Then the military leader ordered Paraskeva to be hanged on a tree again and her body to be burned with candles. Hanged and scorched by fire, the saint prayed to God:

- My Lord and God, Creator and Provider of all creation! You cooled the burning furnace for the three youths, You delivered the First Martyr Thekla from the fire (her memory is September 24, Art. Art.), and save me, unworthy, from the hands of these tormentors.

And suddenly an Angel appeared, touched the candles, and a very strong fire burned, destroying many lawless people. And the people cried:

- Great is the Christian God!

And many people believed in Christ; The military leader, noticing the excitement among the people, was afraid that the people would rise up against him, and hastily ordered the saint to be beheaded with a sword. While her head was being cut off, some heard a voice in heaven saying:

- Rejoice, righteous people, for the martyr Paraskeva is getting married!

Christians reverently buried the saint's body in her home.

So, having completed the feat of torment, the most beautiful maiden went to her Groom, carrying blood instead of oil: she now dwells with the wise virgins in the Chamber of Christ.

The next day, in the morning, the lawless military leader went hunting, but his horse suddenly became furious and threw him into a ravine: falling, the military leader crashed and thus unfortunately gave up his accursed soul.

The holy and pure soul of the Great Martyr Paraskeva departed to the Lord, and from her honest relics many healings were given to the sick, to the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Over time, the name of the Holy Great Martyr Paraskeva Pyatnitsa acquired enormous significance for Orthodox people. Many pious customs and rituals are associated with her memory. Icons of the Holy Great Martyr Paraskeva protect family well-being and happiness. Saint Paraskeva is the patroness of fields, livestock and trade, as well as water sources. Through the prayers of the holy great martyr, healings are accomplished from the most severe mental and physical ailments.

Holy Great Martyr Paraskeva in the village of Mityakinskaya, Rostov region

The first appearance of Saint Paraskeva Friday in the village of Mityakinskaya was June 9/20, 1727, 68 days after the Holy Resurrection of Christ.

This is what history tells us about that distant time: “According to the orders of the Don Spiritual Consistory, I personally inspected my department and the archives. And he didn’t discover anything special in the deanery, except for one icon of St. Martyr Paraskeva in the Nativity Church of the Mityakinskaya village, which is painted in Greek painting on a board the size of an arshin. Since ancient times, all Christians of the surrounding cities and villages have revered it as miraculous, and every year on the tenth Friday after Easter a great crowd of people comes to worship it” (Report for 1846 by the dean of the Kamensk village, Archpriest Alexy Bazhenov).

“...this icon appeared in 1727 under the following circumstances: a severe pestilence raged in the village that year, leaving many houses without people. At one time, two girls of pious life were walking through the forest and saw an icon of St. Great Martyr Paraskeva Friday, from whom they heard a voice: “Go to the village and announce to the priest and the people that they with this icon will go around the village and with faith ask for intercession from the Lord, and the pestilence will stop.” And so it was done: the pestilence really ceased to rage. As a result of this event, from that time on, a religious procession is held annually with a large gathering of people on the tenth Friday after Easter ... to the place where the icon appeared.” (“Don Diocesan Gazette” January 1891)

The icon appeared at the source of St. Paraskeva Fridays on the outskirts of the village. A chapel was built on this site.

In 1793, the icon was decorated with a silver chasuble with gilding. And during the reign of the satanic communist sect, the icon disappeared without a trace...

The veneration of the holy spring continued during the years of persecution of the Church of Christ. People went to the holy place not only from nearby villages, but also from afar: Millerovo, Kamensk, Rostov, even from Krasnodar, Kyiv, Lugansk and Starobelsk...

There was a special crowd of people on the 10th Friday of Easter. Believers went to the source several days before the festival. Anna Tarannikova testifies: “On the street where we lived, pilgrims walked in a line a few days before the holiday. Local residents had a pious custom of placing food and drink for pilgrims at their gates.” And many still remember how their parents allowed pilgrims to spend the night, how the whole clearing at the source, a few days before the celebration, was filled with people waiting.

This was the case until the start of the “godless” five-year plan in 1939. That year, the chapel and the holy spring were destroyed by order of the Communist Party. The elders tell what the Komsomol tractor driver, a certain Bodrukhin, broke. This Bodrukhin broke the chapel, filled up the spring with a tractor, came home and saw that his children were “twisted”... Many elders still remember his son, who was really “twisted”, as if by paralysis. Bodrukhin then lost his mind from grief, and until the end of his days he walked around the village crying and imploring him not to offend Paraskeva.

One of the believers - to our great regret, we do not know their holy names - went to dig up a holy spring, they were arrested and never returned to the village.

It was forbidden to go to the source site under fear of reprisals. People who still remember the Holy Faith were replaced by a generation that grew up during a period of severe persecution of the Church of Christ. Anyone who remembered the holy place was afraid to go there, to look for the holy spring. And then the war, devastation, famine began... The place where the source was quickly became overgrown with thorns, and many who knew that there was a source there could no longer pinpoint exactly where it was.

The second appearance of Saint Paraskeva occurred on June 3/16, 1950, on the second heel of Peter’s Lent or the 10th of Easter.

Here is the invaluable testimony of Evdokia Mikhailovna Logvina, born in 1915, resident of the Durnovka farm. From a magnetic recording of Evdokia Logvina’s story: “It was in 1950. I was very sick, my husband returned from the war as a disabled person, and we had small children. I prayed to God and St. Paraskeva, asked for help and patience. I dream of Saint Paraskeva and orders me to dig a well. One, two, three. I don’t do anything, you never know. Then I dream about my deceased mother and says: “Daughter, do what you are told.” Again I do nothing - I don’t know if the dream is from God. And so, somehow I go to the village. I pass by the place where the chapel was, and suddenly I see... (cries joyfully) Saint Paraskeva standing! Dressed like nuns, only beautiful: red, green. There is a scroll in his hands. He unfolds it, and there is the icon “The Image of the Lord Not Made by Hands.” And he asks me: “Do you believe?” I answer: “I believe!” “Then,” he says, “dig!” And she showed the place with her finger. While I was coming to my senses, Paraskeva left through the thorns...

I persuaded my friends to help me dig... It was scary... They were afraid of the authorities. We are digging, but they don’t believe that we are digging there. The place where the well was has already been forgotten. I tell them: “Dig where it is shown.” Then we came across healthy stones, and - a miracle! One of them hands these stones to me like balls, and I throw them away further. We dig and find oak floors. As soon as the floors were opened, water poured out from the corner - clean, clean. She put her hands up and got drunk.”

At night, fearing persecution, Evlokia’s uncle made a wooden box and put it inside so that the sand would not fall out. And the believers went again to the holy place for prayers and intercession of the Great Martyr Paraskeva Friday.

Thousands of cases of miraculous help have been revealed over the centuries in the village of Mityakinskaya through the prayers of Saint Paraskeva Friday from her miraculous Mityakinskaya icon and holy spring. And in our time, depleted of faith, God’s mercy continues to pour out on us. It is impossible to list all the cases of grace-filled help; even in my memory there were hundreds of them. I will only cite the testimonies of my close spiritual children.

Logvina Evdokia Mikhailovna: “I was very sick. I ended up in the hospital. She prayed to Paraskeva, drank some water and was healed. Nothing hurts yet."

Ulyaniya Gorshkolepova: “In the 60s, she became seriously ill with pneumonia with complications. Spit blood. The doctors said it was hopeless. I didn’t go to the hospital - I went to the source of St. Paraskeva. It was just the 10th Friday. There were a lot of people - everyone was swimming. And I bathed and was healed immediately, like a miracle. Since then, every Friday I went to the holy spring and prayed. And I always tell others: go to the source, pray, ask for help from Saint Paraskeva. After that healing, I don’t go to the hospital, I don’t even have a card there. I pray to Paraskeva and drink her water.”

Anna Kuprienko: “My mother fell ill with radiculitis in the 70s, which caused complications on her legs. Both my mother’s legs were lost and she couldn’t walk at all. We went to Voroshilovgrad to church, ours had not worked for a long time, and we were in church in Elani, where a woman from Logi told how she was healed at the Paraskeva spring in Durnovka. And another woman from Nizhny Mityakin also spoke about healing at the holy spring. Mom began to go to the source and prayed to Saint Paraskeva. I took some water and stood with my feet. And so on several times. And the Lord began to help through the prayers of Saint Paraskeva. Mom began to walk: first with one leg, then with both legs. And then every Friday we went to the holy spring.”

Olga Dyukareva: “In May 2000, my right leg became swollen and terribly painful, so much so that I could not walk. I went to the spring of St. Paraskeva on Friday, when a prayer service was served. She drank some water and washed her feet. I walked twice and the swelling went away - my leg stopped hurting.”

Among the latest testimonies I can mention my spiritual father, Archimandrite Barnabas. His legs hurt from long (50 years!) monastic labors. While visiting us, he walked barefoot along the ditch through which water flows from the bathhouse, right through the mud - after which he received relief, his legs stopped hurting.

I, a sinner, was also honored with help in my illness. Despite the fact that we drink St. water and plunge into the source and don’t even know whether we are treating ourselves more - with pills or with St. water - things happen to us that cannot be explained except by a miracle. Not long ago I injured my wounded leg - old war wounds opened up. No matter what I tried to treat, it only got worse. He asked me to be brought to the holy spring. I walked along the ditch, through the mud, for about 40 minutes. After a few hours, the wounds healed.

Since 2000, the holy spring and chapel have been revived through the diligence of sexton Vyacheslav Kholoshenko, parishioners, Cossacks, with the assistance and assistance of workers and the director of the Mityakinsky forestry enterprise, Sergius Shulzhenko, as well as Anna Tarannikova, Vyacheslav Zgoda. Services to St. Paraskeva Friday have been resumed. Excavations have confirmed the existence of a spring, a chapel and a bathhouse in the 18th century. The Mityakinskaya icon of Paraskeva Friday was painted in honor of the appearance of the holy great martyr in 1950.

The appearances of the miraculous icon and the holy Paraskeva Pyatnitsa herself have been honored by the Mityakin village residents for centuries, and every year on the 68th day after Easter (10th Friday) the patronal day is celebrated in honor of the Great Martyr Paraskeva Pyatnitsa - there is a large gathering of pilgrims. The Mityakinsky village residents also especially honor October 28 / November 10 - the day of martyrdom of the Holy Great Martyr Paraskeva Friday. On these patronal days, especially solemn services are performed, consisting of the Liturgy, a special prayer service served in the Church of St. Paraskeva in front of her miraculous icon in honor of the appearance in Art. Mityakinskaya in 1950, and a procession of the Cross 2 km long from the temple to the ancient holy spring, with the performance of an ancient prayer rite.

On these special days for us, we invite all Christians to share with us the joy of prayer.

Alexander Chernyshkov, priest

What do they pray to this saint for?

First of all, people involved in agriculture and household life, as well as those who have livestock, resort to its help. Paraskeva Friday, who took a vow of virginity, prays before the Lord for those who are expecting a worthy groom. Those who have been unable to conceive a child for a long time can also turn to the Great Martyr in the hope of a miracle of childbirth. Paraskeva Pyatnitsa also helps to establish peace in the family, which is what all Orthodox Christians pray for. The saint heals the spiritual and physical ailments of believers, especially in cases of unbearable pain, as well as during devilish temptations.

Oddly enough, Paraskeva Pyatnitsa also helps in trade matters, as those associated with this activity pray for. This is where the tradition of organizing fairs on Friday came from. The image of Paraskeva is often placed near springs and wells so that the water acquires healing powers. In Rus', it was also customary to tie flowers to her image, and then make a decoction from them, which was used to treat not only physical, but also mental illnesses. The prayer to Paraskeva Pyatnitsa had such great power that people hid its text in a piece of cloth, which they applied to the sore spot and were healed.

Cover me quickly!

In Rus', people revered Paraskeva Pyatnitsa as the intercessor of girls wanting to get married. That is why they even prayed to her on the Intercession, asking for help in matters of love. Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, who never thinks about marriage and has taken a vow of virginity, helps chaste girls make a worthy choice in their desire to start a family.

The Guardian of Friday, Saint Paraskeva, seemed to our ancestors as a strict woman who commanded them to strictly observe fasting on Wednesday and Friday, namely not to do household chores and not to bring discord among the people. She also forbade them to eat fast food on these days. The saint came to many peasants in visions, so no one doubted that it was the great martyr herself. That is why in some parts of our country the custom of postponing sewing, washing clothes and other tasks on the day of Paraskeva Friday has still been preserved. Our ancestors also said that the holy great martyr walked through the villages of Little Russia, whose body was pricked with needles because of the sins of women who did not observe strict fasting on the days allotted for her. In honor of Paraskeva, 12 Friday days were established in Rus', which were timed to coincide with some great holiday, for example the Annunciation, Easter, the beginning of Lent, etc.

And this is what they ask Saint Paraskeva:

  • about healing from physical and spiritual illnesses;
  • about the patronage of family well-being, rural work and livestock;
  • about procreation;
  • about a successful marriage;
  • about the conception and birth of a female child;
  • about assistance in trade matters, so the tradition of holding fairs on Fridays arose.

How to address a saint?

The prayer to Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, read with all my heart, is very effective. After all, all saints are mediators between the Lord and people. The requests of martyrs and saints in the face of the Almighty are always fulfilled. Therefore, prayer is an obligatory component of the life of an Orthodox person. In matters of home, as well as love, Paraskeva Pyatnitsa became an assistant to the Russian people. What do young girls pray for and ask for? Of course, about a worthy groom. For such cases, there is a special prayer addressed to Paraskeva. In it, the virgins ask the saint to help them find their husband, just as the great martyr found her Heavenly Bridegroom.

Prayer to the martyr Paraskeva, named Friday.

Having taken a vow of virginity and renouncing the blessings of the world, Saint Paraskeva endured torture and martyrdom and persecution by the Emperor Diocletian. Since ancient times, she has enjoyed special love and reverence in Rus' as an assistant in agricultural work and women's concerns. They pray to her for protection of the family hearth; in marital infertility; about worthy grooms.

With your holy prayers, be a helper to us sinners, intercede and pray for the damned and extremely negligent sinners, hasten to help us, for we are very weak; pray to the Lord, pure maiden, pray to the Merciful, holy martyr, pray to your Bridegroom, immaculate bride of Christ, that through your prayers we may help you, having escaped the darkness of sin, in the light of the true faith and divine deeds, enter into the eternal light of the unevening day, into the city of everlasting joy, in now you shine brightly with glory and endless joy, glorifying and singing with all the heavenly powers the tri-radiant one Deity, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer to the Holy Martyr Paraskeva Pyatnitsa

O most courageous maiden! Oh, strong martyr Saint Paraskeva! With your holy prayers, be a helper to us sinners, intercede and pray for the damned and extremely negligent sinners, hasten to help us, for we are extremely weak. Pray to the Lord, pure maiden, pray to the Merciful, holy martyr, pray to your Bridegroom, immaculate bride of Christ, so that by your prayers, having escaped the darkness of sin, in the light of the true faith and divine deeds we will enter into the eternal light of the never-evening day, into the city of everlasting joy, in now you are shining brightly with glory and endless joy, glorifying and singing with all the heavenly powers the Trisagion of the One Deity, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Text of Paraskeva's prayer for the groom:

You, taught by your parents from the days of your youth, have always reverently honored the days of the redemptive passions of our Lord Jesus Christ, for His sake you yourself voluntarily suffered. You, who by the right hand of the angel of God were wonderfully healed from incurable wounds and received indescribable lightness, amazed the unfaithful tormentors. You, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and by the power of your prayer in the pagan temple, having cast down all the idols, you have crushed them to dust.

You, scorched by the lights, with your single prayer to the omnipotent Lord you extinguished the natural fire, and with the same flame, miraculously kindled through the angel of God, having burned the frantic lawless people, you led many people to the knowledge of the true God. You, for the glory of the Lord, having accepted the sword beheading of your head from the tormentors, you valiantly ended your suffering feat, ascending with your soul into heaven, into the palace of your longed-for Bridegroom, Christ the King of Glory, who joyfully greeted you with this heavenly voice: Rejoice, righteous ones, for the martyr Paraskeva was crowned !

In the same way, today we greet you, long-suffering one, and, looking at your holy icon, we cry out to you with tenderness: all-honorable Paraskeva! We know that you have great boldness towards the Lord: pray therefore to His Lover of Mankind and for us from those present and praying to you. May He give us, like you, patience and complacency in troubles and sorrowful circumstances; May He, through your intercession and intercession, grant a joyful, prosperous and peaceful life, health and salvation, and good haste in everything to our beloved Fatherland, may He bestow His holy blessing and peace, and may He grant all Orthodox Christians, through your holy prayers, confirmation in the faith , piety and holiness, success in Christian love and all virtue: may He cleanse us sinners from all filth and vice: may He protect us with His holy angels, may He intercede, preserve and have mercy on everyone with His holy grace and make us heirs and partakers of His Heavenly Kingdom.

And thus, having improved salvation through your holy prayers, intercession and intercession, all-glorious bride of Christ Paraskeva, let us glorify all the most pure and magnificent name of the true God, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, in our saints always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

It is very good when parents pray for the happiness of their children. Any mother wants her daughter to find her destiny and be happy. In this case, prayer for your daughter’s marriage helps.

Prayer text from rival Paraskeva Pyatnitsa

Protects the family from quarrels, scandals and divorces. She is the patroness of the family and a helper for women who experience difficulties in relationships with their husbands.

The text of the prayer from the rival Saint Paraskeva Friday:

Most Holy Blessed Martyr Paraskeva Friday, guardian of the Christian faith, image of purity! Hear me, sinful servant of God (name) and do not leave me in my sorrows! Do not be angry at my request, but give me your great mercy and help. Take away my rival, who is leading my husband away from my love, drawing him to herself, tempting him to sin. Help him overcome temptation, enlighten him with the light of grace and do not let him wallow in sin. Turn him to me again, for my feelings are strong and sincere, and our union is honest. With your holy prayers, be a helper to me, a sinner, for I am weak in spirit and in the face of this misfortune. Let the rival not touch our life, may God forgive her for her sins and not punish her ardently. I trust in your help, I believe in the boundless mercy and justice of God. Amen.

Prayer to the Great Martyr Saint Paraskeva Friday for early marriage (video)

In the old days, in every home iconostasis there was always an icon of Paraskeva Friday, especially revered by girls and women, to which they directed their prayers about the most important things in life. What feat did the one whom the icon “St. Paraskeva” shows us before the Lord accomplish?

Life of St. Paraskeva

Life of St. Paraskeva fell on one of the most difficult periods of early Christianity - the 3rd century, the reign of Emperor Diocletian, a fierce hater of all those who professed the True Faith.

Paraskeva was born in the city of Iconium (now in Turkey), into a pious family where they sacredly honored the covenants of Jesus: they prayed, fasted, read Wednesday and Friday, commemorating the Passion of Christ on these days. They named their daughter Paraskeva (Friday translated from Greek; in Rus' this name turned into Praskovya, one of the most common female names).

The girl grew up keeping God's commandments and was distinguished by her piety and rare beauty. Already at a young age she was left an orphan, but continued the godly ministry of her parents. Paraskeva spent the good inheritance left by her parents on food and clothing for the poor and wretched, and very little on herself. She was not attracted by beautiful clothes, jewelry, or entertainment; she devoted her entire life to the Lord and preaching Christ’s teachings, although this threatened her with persecution.

Paraskeva rejected all suitors, because she considered Jesus to be her only suitor. Her sermons inspired many people to convert to the faith of Christ, but she was constantly reminded of the dangers of such open preaching.

Martyrdom of St. Paraskeva

Meanwhile, Emperor Diocletian sent his envoys to all the cities and towns of the Roman Empire to identify Christians, force them to renounce their faith, and if they refused, torture and execute them. One of them arrived in Iconium, the hometown of Paraskeva. This was Eparch Aetius. He was immediately informed about the girl Paraskeva, who professed the faith of Christ and rejected idolatry.

By order of Aetius, the girl was brought to him. He was shocked by her beauty, and especially by the joy from which she seemed to glow. Paraskeva did not hide her faith, and Aetius faced a difficult choice: she delighted him so much that he invited her to marry him if Paraskeva renounced her God and brought a pagan sacrifice, otherwise he would have to give her into the hands of the executioner.

But Aetia Paraskeva also stated that she has only one groom - Jesus, for whom she is ready to sacrifice her life. Aetius flew into a rage and ordered the executioners to undress her and scourge her with ox sinews. During the scourging, Paraskeva prayed, and when Aetius, unable to bear the sight of her torture, once again invited her to worship the pagan gods, she did not answer, gritting her teeth. Aetius burst out with furious curses and insults to all who believe in Christ, and then Paraskeva spat in his face.

The eparch could not forgive this. He gave the order to his executioners, and they hung the girl upside down and began to torment her body with a sharp iron. Streams of blood flowed from Paraskeva’s body onto the ground, and she continued to pray. The executioner saw that the torture had to be ended, otherwise the girl would die, and by order of Aetius they threw her into prison, dooming her to a long, painful death.

Angel of the Lord

Paraskeva actually ended up in prison near death, her body was so wounded, but her soul rejoiced, because all her torment was in the name of Christ. And the Lord appreciated her faithfulness: He sent an angel to her, who not only consoled the exhausted girl, but also wiped her body with a sponge, causing the wounds to heal, and all her beauty returned to her. With renewed vigor, Paraskeva began to offer prayers of thanksgiving to Jesus.

Miracles of Saint Paraskeva

The next day, the guards, expecting to see Paraskeva dead, were shocked by her healthy appearance, her returning beauty and the joy with which she praised the Lord. The eparch ordered her to be brought and declared that she was healed thanks to the pagan gods. He himself led her to the temple. Paraskeva did not resist, but when she offered a prayer to Jesus in a pagan temple, the earth shook and the statues of the gods turned to dust. Many witnesses to this miracle later converted to Christianity, but Aetius doomed her to new torture.

They hung Paraskeva from a pole and began to burn her with torches, but, heeding her prayer, the Lord took the flame away from the maiden and turned it on the executioners. Then Aetius, realizing his powerlessness, ordered her head to be cut off. Her soul flew off to the Kingdom of Heaven. But the saint did not remain unavenged: Aetius, in order to unwind, went hunting; on the way, his horse threw him off, and his tormentor died on the spot.

Many Christians came to the True Faith thanks to Paraskeva’s preaching and her miracles. They buried her body, and subsequently the relics of Saint Paraskeva revealed many miraculous healings.

For her feat for the glory of Christ, Paraskeva was elevated to the rank of holy great martyrs; The Paraskeva icon represents her as a beautiful girl with a cross in her right hand and a scroll with the Creed in her left, and the angels of the Lord hold a crown over her head.

Customs associated with Holy Paraskeva Friday

In the Orthodox tradition, Paraskeva enjoys great reverence and is considered an intercessor and assistant in many matters, often related to housekeeping. In peasant huts, the Praskovya icon was always elegantly decorated; On the day of her memory, November 10, the peasants brought fruits to the temple for consecration and stored them in the house until the next harvest. Fabric spun from flax was also blessed, which is why Paraskeva was also popularly called Flax.

In the villages of St. They prayed to Paraskeva that the livestock would be healthy, especially the wet-nurse cows. Her image was often placed near springs and wells to give the water healing powers. St. Paraskeva is also considered the patroness of those involved in commercial affairs. Since in former times it was forbidden to trade on Saturday, all purchases were made in advance, on Friday. Even the name “Friday Fairs” appeared.

Paraskeva was also considered the guardian of Friday, when it was necessary to fast and postpone household chores: washing, sewing, etc. In some villages this custom is still honored.

How does prayer in front of the icon of Paraskeva Friday help?

Saint Paraskeva, as we remember, took a vow of chastity, and her only groom was Jesus Christ. Oddly enough, its meaning lies in love affairs: to St. Girls turn to Paraskeva with a prayer for a good groom, a prosperous and peaceful family life, and women who have not been able to give birth to a child for a long time.

Prayer before the Paraskeva Friday icon helps in healing spiritual and physical ailments, especially those associated with severe pain (toothache, fever, etc.).

In the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra there is a miraculous icon of Paraskeva Friday, found more than three centuries ago in the village of Ilyeshi near St. Petersburg. In Moscow, the icon of Paraskeva Friday is located in the church in Butovo, which was built in her honor back in the 16th century, now it has been restored and is open to believers. Most churches have icons of St. Great Martyr Paraskeva Pyatnitsa is the most revered female saint among Orthodox Christians.

O great servant of God! O most courageous maiden! O strong martyr Saint Paraskeva!

Christianity and paganism are two sides of the ancient Russian holiday.

The special reverence of the Orthodox for the Great Martyr Paraskeva Friday, the female intercessor, in many ways continues the tradition of worshiping the goddess of the pagan cult of Mokosh. The fusion of two images in the popular consciousness was served by common functions - both Makosh and Paraskeva favored marriage and childbirth.

Saint Paraskeva Friday

It is known that Paraskeva Pyatnitsa was born in the 3rd century into a wealthy senatorial family in Iconium, the capital of ancient Lacaonia, in Asia Minor. From the days of Holy Week, her deeply religious parents especially revered Good Friday - the day of the suffering of Jesus Christ on the cross. Therefore, the daughter, born on a Friday, was named Paraskeva, which means “Friday” in Greek. Raised in a pious family, Paraskeva took a vow of celibacy from a young age and decided to devote her life to God and the enlightenment of pagans.

During the struggle of Emperor Diocletian with preachers of the Christian faith, Paraskeva was captured on the orders of the city ruler Aetius. The head of Lacaonia, struck by the beauty of the girl, even wanted to marry her, but first demanded that she make a sacrifice to a pagan idol. For refusing to renounce the Orthodox faith, on the orders of Aetius, Paraskeva was tortured for a long time and painfully, and then thrown into prison. According to legend, the Lord healed Paraskeva, who offered prayers. But this did not stop her persecutors. They began to set the girl on fire with torches and then cut off her head. After burying her body, the Orthodox began to venerate her relics and noticed that sick people began to be miraculously healed.

Pagan goddess Makosh

In the peasant beliefs of the Russian North, Paraskeva is correlated with the semi-pagan goddess - the spinner Makosh. The image of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa was overshadowed by the cult of veneration of the archaic Mokosh; people also attributed to her an influence on fertility and marriages.

To this day, many rituals and customs are associated with the memory of the great martyr. In Ancient Rus', even temples and roadside chapels were called by the name Friday. People called the saint Paraskeva Friday, Pyatina or Petka. Icon painters depicted a tall ascetic with a stern expression on her face. Icons of the righteous martyr, crowned with a radiant wreath, were revered and decorated with ribbons and monists. Rural workers brought flowers and fragrant herbs to her face, believing that it was Paraskeva who took care of the fields they sown and the preservation of livestock from death. On her memorable day, fruits were brought to temples for consecration, and then they were kept all year as sacred objects.

“Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, like Makosh and her mermaids, was associated with water; she patronizes holy healing springs and wells; “Pyatnitsky springs” are known.
The complex of images of Paraskeva itself includes the concept of sacred earthly moisture. Moreover: the water of the earth and Paraskeva are identical - this is evidenced by the legends about the icons of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, who, unknown how and why, appeared in springs and reservoirs.”

“The first harvested sheaf was sometimes dedicated to Friday. Friday's specialty was linen and yarn. The day of November 10 (October 28 according to the old style - the church date of St. Paraskeva) was the day of Flax Friday, when “common people carry tattered first-fruit flax to church.” Processing flax and spinning tow and wool are especially similar in Russian folklore to Pyatnitsa and Makosh: both of them are extremely attentive to these women’s affairs.”

Boris Rybakov, archaeologist, researcher of Slavic culture and history of Ancient Rus'

Located in household shrines, the shrine acts as the guardian of the family hearth and well-being. Orthodox believers call Paraskeva a healer of physical and mental illnesses, and also pray to her for the health of children.

The icon of Paraskeva Friday is one of the most beloved among Orthodox Christians. Her image helps to heal mental and physical traumas, find true love and establish relationships with loved ones.

The icon of Paraskeva Friday is considered the patroness of trade and tailors. Many Orthodox and pre-Christian traditions are associated with the image of Paraskeva among the Russian people. In former times, the veneration of the image of the saint was carried out everywhere, and the people observed twelve Fridays, timed to coincide with the main church holidays. Also on Fridays, all women and girls were forbidden to spin, and they were engaged in sewing. This tradition is associated with the memory of Good Friday, with the time of Jesus’ leading to Calvary.

The life story of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa

Primary sources report that Paraskeva was born into an Orthodox family in the third century, and her parents named the girl, who was born on Friday, with a name that is consonant with the name, which translated from Greek means “Friday.”

The girl grew up in love for the Lord and took a vow of innocence to him, preached the Word of God and helped the people around her to find true faith during the reign of the cruel and oppressive Emperor Diocletian. His governor tried to force the girl to renounce her faith and make a sacrifice to idols, but Paraskeva did not follow his demands, standing firmly on her convictions. The torment to which the believer was subjected did not break her spirit and will, and heavenly angels healed her from her injuries every time after the torture. However, the miracles taking place did not convince the governor, and Paraskeva Pyatnitsa was executed by cutting off her head. However, even after his death, the saint’s relics continued to work miracles, healing the suffering and protecting them from negativity.

Where is the miraculous image now?

The image of the saint can be found, perhaps, in every Orthodox church. Description of the icon of Paraskeva Friday

Often on icons the saint is depicted in full growth, holding a plate with eyes in her hand. This image is taken from the life of the saint. She was repeatedly tortured, trying to turn her away from her faith in the Lord, but Paraskeva remained unharmed thanks to her prayers. After the emperor ordered her to be put in a vat of resin, the maiden remained unharmed. Then the emperor asked Paraskeva to throw hot liquid at him. As expected, he received terrible burns and went blind for his sinful acts. However, after his requests, Paraskeva restored his sight. From then on, the eyes on the plate, skillfully depicted by the icon painter, indicate that the holy image is able to cure blindness. In Paraskeva’s hand, the cross is a symbol of faith and devotion to the Lord. On some icons, Paraskeva is depicted half-length, dressed in a traditional icon case. In her hand is a text with the Creed and a cross as a sign of martyrdom.

After all, everyone canonized by their earthly deeds received the ability to help people after death in different ways. In this article we will talk about who Saint Paraskeva Friday is, what she helps with, and how to pray to her.

Holy Great Martyr Paraskeva: life story

Paraskeva or Friday is the name given to a newborn girl born in the city of Konya, Türkiye. Her parents, peasants, trained and raised Paraskeva in strict Christian traditions; already in her early years, the girl was given a celibate dinner, and her life was devoted to serving God.

She refused numerous offers of marriage. Everything that was left after the death of her parents was distributed to those in need. One day, seeing a beautiful young girl, one of the nobles of King Diocletian told her that if she renounced her faith, he would take her as his wife. Having received a refusal, he ordered her to be flogged in public. But even after this, Paraskeva did not betray her convictions, giving a second refusal to the torturer.

Then the girl was hanged on a tree and torn with iron claws, after which she was thrown into prison, barely alive. There an angel appeared to her, healed her, revived her, and made her face even more beautiful. Having seen such a miracle, they hung Paraskeva again on a tree, and again began to torture her body and burn it with fire.

A heavenly angel descended to her for the second time, seeing this, people believed in Christianity, but the royal servants were afraid of the uprising of the people and decided to kill the girl and stabbed her. For Orthodox people, the name of Saint Paraskeva did not disappear with her death. Believers began to come to the place of execution for healing and received it. Icons with the image of the martyr appeared in many homes.
