What would you say if one day you received an invitation that read as follows: “Mrs. and Mr. Bopaiah request to join them and be honored by your presence at the ceremony of feeding the ancestral spirits. The ceremony will take place on June 7, 1970 at the ancestral house of Okki Batanda, Kadiyathur, Coorg.” You would probably think that you were being played or hoaxed. I admit that such a thought occurred to me when the Merkar postman handed me an envelope with the above-quoted invitation. I held a thick square of glossy paper in my hands and re-read the text of the invitation, printed in the Mercara printing house. But even though I had done this several times already, the text of the invitation did not change. “At the ceremony of feeding the spirits of ancestors...” - still stubbornly remained in him. But I remembered that I was not just anywhere, but in Coorg, and, therefore, all this was quite serious - and this invitation, and typographic letters, and words about the spirits of ancestors who need to be fed. I accepted the invitation without hesitation, and informed Mrs. and Mr. Bopaia by telephone (however, I could not contact the spirits of their ancestors in this way, and therefore they had to come to terms with the unexpectedness of my appearance in their house).
During my stay in Coorg, I had already become accustomed to the spirits of my ancestors and even somehow became attached to them. Something related appeared in our relationship. I got used to them quickly and painlessly. My previous experience helped me with this. After all, before this I had a lot of dealings with all kinds of spirits, prophets, oracles, wizards and even goddesses. With one of them, living in the Gadaba tribe in Orissa, I was even in conflict for some time. Then the conflict was resolved in my favor. And I was very proud of it. The invitation on glossy paper provided me with the opportunity to enrich my past “otherworldly experience” with another important acquisition - participation in a charity campaign aimed at maintaining the mortal existence of the spirits of Kurg ancestors.
And then one fine, but rainy morning, Mr. Bopaia's car stopped under my windows. We set off for the village of Kadiyatur, which was 120 miles from Mercara. It was in this village that the ancestral home of Okka Batanda was located. That okka whose members still remembered their first ancestor. The ancestor was called Ayyappa and was born under rather tragic circumstances.
Back in the 18th century, the ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan, launched a series of raids on Coorg. Kurgi resisted the Muslim conqueror, and many of them died in this unequal struggle. Tipu's soldiers, on his orders, slaughtered and destroyed the families of those who fought against him. Thus perished the rebellious Okka Batanda. Out of several hundred people, only one woman accidentally survived. The woman was pregnant. Hiding in the forest from her pursuers, she gave birth to a son there, whom she named Ayyappa in honor of the god of hunting. She believed that this god, unlike people, provided her with shelter and saved the life of her son.
A mother with a child in her arms wandered through the forests of Coorg for a long time. And only when Tipu Sultan’s army left her native place, she came out to the people. The boy grew up and turned into a strong man-warrior. He rebuilt the house of his ancestors, which had been burned by enemies, and brought his young wife there. Thus, okka Batanda gained a second life thanks to Ayyappa. And so Ayyappa took the most honorable place among the spirits of later ancestors. When I found out about all this, I did not regret accepting the invitation. It was flattering to meet such a wonderful and courageous spirit like Ayyappa.
We arrived when all the equipment was already assembled. The Kurgi sat on wooden benches in the central hall. The men read newspapers and magazines while waiting for the ceremony. Women prepared food for their ancestors. They did this on a clay hearth located in the hall opposite the cannicombre - the room of the ancestral spirits. Blue smoke floated through the hall and settled as soot on the wooden columns supporting the roof. From above, through a hole in the roof, rain dripped and filled the “well” - totti - with water. Suspended from copper chains burned a sacred oil lamp, lit in honor of the ancestors. Only this lamp and the uncertain light of a rainy day, penetrating through a hole in the roof, illuminated the hall. Therefore, it was gloomy, but there was enough light to read newspapers. Most of those reading the newspapers were in good European suits and only a few of the older ones were dressed in Kurg sweatshirts.
Mr. Somann and Mr. Apanna, both lawyers and planters, having finished reading, discussed the latest political news. The guests continued to arrive. They entered the hall, bent in front of the elders, touching their feet with their fingertips. The women were busy around two large copper vats that stood on the hearth. Rice was cooked there and wild boar curry was stewed. Seductive smells floated through the hall, and people talking quietly glanced at the copper vats from time to time. I couldn’t say anything about the spirits of my ancestors, but the living ones clearly wanted to eat. I went out onto the veranda. There, in front of the entrance, hung deer antlers and wild buffalo antlers. Long black pigs walked in the paved courtyard and from time to time entered into battle with dogs roaming nearby.
Finally the solemn moment arrived. The men put down their newspapers and spread banana and breadfruit leaves on the benches of the hall. A dish of steaming rice and curry was placed under the sacred lamp. Cognac was poured into cups made from breadfruit leaves.
- Why cognac? - I asked Mr. Somanna.
“But we must show respect to our ancestors,” he replied. - Don’t give them arrack or toddy to drink. These drinks are only for coolies.
Everything became clear to me immediately. The spirits of the ancestors of the planters drink cognac; for the spirits of the ancestors of the coolies, muddy arrack is enough. For the spirits of the ancestors, everything was the same as for the living.
The second dish with steaming rice and cognac was placed in the room where all the spirits of the ancestors lived. Feeding has begun. The eldest in the okka, and he was Mr. Apanna, made a sign to everyone. Men lined up in front of the sacred lamp on one side, women on the other. Mr. Apanna was closest to the sacred lamp. He folded his hands in pranam and, without taking his eyes off the light of the lamp, began in a dull voice:
Mandalinad, Nalaknad,
Kygadnad, Marenad!
According to the custom of the Kurgs,
We got together.
Together we pray
To our ancestors.
Together we feed them.
If we did
Something is wrong,
May our ancestors forgive us.
Bless, ancestors,
Our okka,
Bless, ancestors,
Our daughters, whom
We got married.
Keep us and them safe.
Today we are all
We welcome you.
We welcome you! - the others responded. After these words, silence reigned in the house. Now you could hear another battle between black pigs and dogs starting in the yard.
- Stop them! - Apanna got angry. - How long can you tolerate this?
- Whom? - a voice suddenly rang out. - Who to appease? Ancestors? But they are being quiet. Quiet, quiet. Very quiet.
Mr. Muthanna stood in the doorway. He had apparently just appeared and was late for the general prayer. But judging by the cheerful expression on his face, this did not upset him at all. He stood in the doorway, but for some reason this time the opening turned out to be narrow for him, and Mr. Muthanna pierced his shoulder first into the right corner, then into the left.
“Quiet, quiet,” he repeated and chuckled.
- I'll show you my ancestors! - Apanna, who came to his senses, exploded. - I'll show you "quietly"!
Muthanna finally broke away from the door and, holding out his hands in a kindred greeting, rushed towards Apanna. People around laughed.
- A shame! - Apanna shouted. - This have not happened before.
“N-not a shame,” Muthanna said instructively, raising a finger. - N-not a shame. And rum. A very good rum in honor of our ancestors. Our distant and beloved ancestors. After all, they lived... Yes, yes, they lived... A thousand years ago. And Ayyappa is even more, two thousand. Here!
Muthanna was pushed towards one of the rooms, pushed into it and the door closed.
Apanna, having calmed down, took the dish served to him by the women and headed towards the exit. Everyone else followed him.
The rain became heavier and the procession walked under umbrellas. Led by Apanna, we approached the ancestral field, where everyone took off their shoes. We have entered sacred precincts. Slapping their bare feet on the eroded soil, the illustrious descendants of Ayyappa, doctors and lawyers, planters and officials, headed towards the kaimada, which stood in the center of the ancestral field. Nearby was the grave of the main ancestor - Ayyappa. Above the altar-caimada, similar to a stepped pyramid, a wooden pavilion with long benches was built. The entire okka sat on these benches. An oil lamp was burning in the altar, and in front of this lamp Apanna placed a dish of food, a bottle of cognac, a bottle of rum and an empty glass. The spirits of the ancestors could begin the feast with a copious libation. Showing their direct involvement in this feast, the men took turns walking in front of the lamp, holding out their palms to its fire. And again Apanna read before the altar the same prayer that he had read in the house. Only now it began with the words: “We have gathered in the kaymada.” The entire Okka, stretched out in a chain, walked around the altar three times in solemn silence. True, Apanna behaved somewhat nervously and from time to time glanced at the path leading across the field to the house. He was afraid that the figure of a drunken and therefore rebellious Muthanna might appear on it. But this did not happen. The Okka members threw grains of rice onto the altar and again sat decorously on the benches around the altar. They sat in silence, from time to time casting expressive glances at the bottles standing at the altar. Finally Apanna made a sign, and the descendants took the cognac and rum from their ancestors and drank to the health of their spirits. The ancestors received only three dishes with rice flavored with fragrant curry. But the descendants did not limit themselves in food. They quickly finished the contents of two copper vats. This, apparently, is the difference between an ancestor and a descendant, between a healthy body and... a spirit.
Then, when I received invitations on glossy paper, I was not surprised. I knew how to feed the spirits of my ancestors, especially if they were from Coorg.
Maslenitsa week
FEBRUARY 16 - FEBRUARY 22, 2015
Dear girls, Maslenitsa week is starting soon - it is not only a fun and tasty time, it is also a very important period of veneration of ancestors, when you can clear the karma of the Family in a short time!
Maslenitsa week is one of the most powerful weeks of the year, in which a woman can cleanse her family and give it strength. At this time, our ancestors are especially close to us.
Your success, your personal life and your life scenarios depend on the strength of your family and the relationships within it. If the relationships in your family are weak, difficult, negative, this will affect your life.
It was not in vain that you were incarnated in this family. This is YOUR Family. You are his continuation. Feel this kinship, feel that these are your native energies. You love and honor your ancestors. Feel involved in your family history. Now you are writing it with your whole life, and may the pages of your ancestral history written by you be bright and clean!
If you feel that you need to ask your family for forgiveness for some negative thoughts or actions, do so. Let your family feel your love. More supportive ancestral energies will come to you. You will feel more confident and strong. In this way, you yourself will cleanse yourself of unforgiveness and the negative energies that it creates, and you will help your family. And this must be done with both births - both paternal and maternal. You will feel relieved, and your family will be grateful to you.
It is especially important to cleanse the karma of the family for those in whose family there are suicides, unborn children (abortions), and separated from the family. These members of the clan invisibly influence the life of each next person in the clan. The heaviest curses fall on the youngest member of the clan in the female line. Sometimes we ourselves become the person on whom all this burden falls, or this happens to our daughters. And often we don’t understand why there is constant “slipping” in life, everything doesn’t turn out the way we wanted, the expected does not bring joy. During this Maslenitsa week there is an opportunity to cleanse your family from sins, litigation and suffering.
A woman, as a priestess of the clan, can and should do this in order to protect her children and her happiness. The heavy karma of your family will be cleared and you will gain strength and joy. New thoughts will illuminate your head.
Perhaps even the members of the clan themselves will appear in good dreams and thank you for this (many psychologists encounter such evidence in their practice).
In the future, you will gain the protection and support of the Family, which gives you a feeling of peace and security.
✿ Ritual for cleansing Rod's karma ✿
To carry out this ritual you will need: two new plates from which no one has eaten, a church candle, a new pack of rice.
The ritual is best done on the waning moon and on the week of veneration of the Family (i.e. Maslenitsa Week). It is advisable to perform this practice in the morning, because in the morning the energy is most beneficial.
So, get up in the morning, take a bath and put on clean clothes. The kitchen should also be clean.
Put the rice to cook and while it is cooking, read prayers over it. You can't taste the rice. When it is cooked, you place it on a clean plate and place it in front of the image of God. Offer food to God. Here are the prayer options:
Prayer for offering food in the Christian tradition
(For the blessing of food and drink for the laity)
Lord Jesus Christ our God, bless our food and drink with your prayers.
Thy Most Pure Mother and all Thy Saints, for blessed art thou forever.
Amen. (And cross food and drink).
Vedic mantra for food offering:
Namo Om Vishnu padaya
Krishna prestaya bhutale
Srimate bhaktivedanta
Swamin iti namine
Namaste Saraswati Deve
Gaura Vani pracharine
Nirvisesha-shunvadi
Pashchatya desha tarine
Nama maha vadanyaya
Krishna prema pradaya te
Krishnaya Krishna Chaitanya
Namne gaura-tvishe namah
Namo brahmanya-devaya
Go-brahmanya-hitaya cha
Jagad-dhitaya krsnaya
Govindaya namo namah
Wait 5-10 minutes until the Lord sanctifies your food.
Then you put this rice on another new plate. Place it in another place, light a candle and say: “I invite members of my clan to come and eat this food.” In this case, it is advisable for you to stay in the room and just sit and pray for 20-30 minutes. Then thank your family: “I thank you for taking this food.” Make a bow.
You can put up photographs of your departed relatives and “feed” them blessed food. But you can also do this virtually.
ATTENTION!!! This food should not be eaten by living people and also should not be thrown away. You need to give it to the animals or take it out and put it on the ground.
This completes the ritual.
You cannot eat from these plates. Mark the one for God and the one for the Ancestors, and it is better to remove them separately.
This is a very powerful practice, it is advisable to do it several times. You can write to me about changes in your life when you do this!
IMPORTANT NOTES:
✿ You can do this ritual for two births at once, for yours and for your husband, then you will need two plates for Childbirth;
✿ On critical days (when a woman is considered unclean), this ritual cannot be performed;
✿ The ritual has great power if it is performed by several women of this Genus, for example, you with your mother or sister or daughter.
✿ Men can also do this ritual;
✿ You can cook a little rice, or you can cook the whole pack. The more animals you feed, the better;
✿ Pregnant women can do this practice;
✿ Try to be concentrated!
And remember, you are a woman, in your hands is the opportunity to create a strong strong family that will be a reliable support for you, your children and grandchildren!
Also try to establish relationships with all living relatives. If necessary, forgive them and ask for forgiveness. Forgive also those who have left and ask their souls for forgiveness. This is important work that no one will do for us.
Our family tree is Our protection and nourishment, it is Our support, it is Our support in difficult times. Treat your family with respect and you will make your life easier. And if you seriously work on cleansing and healing the family, you can become one of the guardians of the family, which is honorable and important for yourself, for your development.
THE PRACTICE OF CLEANING THE KARMA OF THE KIND "FEEDING THE ANCESTORS" This tradition was everywhere, but was not fully preserved. Until now, on the anniversary of the day of death, relatives go to the cemetery and put a “stack” there for the deceased, sometimes they put cigarettes on his grave, put jelly. Initially, the tradition was much more benign. In Vedic society, any food is sanctified. And consecrated food, that is, that which was first offered on the altar to God, has miraculous properties. Anyone who has tried it will understand. And feeding others with such food has always been beneficial, but it was especially important for those who have a difficult situation. For example, among the dead, whose souls have not calmed down. It is quite simple to understand whether the soul has calmed down. If, remembering someone, we have anxiety, it means that it is very difficult for him somewhere right now. And sometimes memories bring a bright sadness. This means that everything is fine with the person now. Descendants were obliged to take care of the souls of their ancestors. How? By making offerings of consecrated food to them. The one who works miracles. This was beneficial for everyone - the suffering of their ancestors was alleviated, and it became easier for those who live now. If you are worried about your relationship with your parents, then again feed them blessed food (but not the same food that you fed your ancestors). Treat them with or without reason to the food into which you have invested the maximum of love and which you have offered to God. I assure you, there will be changes. And very strong. The Bhagavad-Gita says: “The increase in the number of unwanted children inevitably leads to the fact that family members and people who destroy family traditions go to hell. With the degeneration of the clan, the forefathers face a fall, for their descendants stop bringing them food and water.” And this is what is happening now. Children are born “by chance”, family traditions and connections are lost. We are completely defenseless in this world, like small boats in a huge ocean, because our families are small and fragile. This tradition of honoring ancestors and offering them water and food exists in all traditions, relics, and cultures. But we have already forgotten why we do this, so often with such “offerings” (like a shot of vodka, a pack of cigarettes or other products of ignorance at graves), drinking alcohol at a funeral only aggravates the suffering of the Souls of our ancestors. While we do not understand what we are doing and why. It is time to return to awareness and true Knowledge. To carry out this ritual you will need: two new plates from which no one has eaten, a church candle, a new pack of rice. It is advisable to perform this practice in the morning, because in the morning the energy is most beneficial. So, get up in the morning, take a bath and put on clean clothes. The kitchen should also be clean. Put the rice to cook, and while it cooks, read prayers over it. You can't taste the rice. When it is cooked, you place it on a clean plate and place it in front of the image of God. Offer food to God. Here are prayer options, depending on your spiritual tradition: Prayer for offering food in the Christian tradition: (For the blessing of food and drink for the laity) “Lord Jesus Christ our God, bless us with prayers for food and drink. Thy Most Pure Mother and all Thy Saints, for blessed art thou forever. Amen". (And cross food and drink). Muslim prayer for the blessing of food: Raise your hands, palms up, over the food and read the prayer “Bismillahi-Rrahmani-Rrahim.” Meaning: asking Allah for a blessing, then “Allahumma barik lyana fima razaktana wa kina azaba-nnar.” Meaning: “O my Allah, put grace into what You have given us as good, and protect us from the fire of hell!” Lower your hands, as if covering the food with the blessing you have received. At the end of the meal, Allah should be praised with the words “al-Hamdu Llyakh” (praise Allah) Vedic mantra of food offering: Namo Om Vishnu Padaya Krishna Prestelah Bhaktale Bhakamate Swamin Iti Namasta Sarasvati Gaura Vanya Pracharine Nirvisha-Shunstae Pashnya Rine Nama Mach vadanyaya Krishna prema pradaya te Krishnaya Krishna Caitanya Namne gaura-tvishe namah Namo brahmanya-devaya Go-brahmanya-hitaya cha Jagad-dhitaya krsnaya Govindaya namo namah Praises - prayers in the Slavic tradition for the ritual of "Feeding the Ancestors": PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION OF WATER (Before the Idol We pour lighted water from a brother, a jug, a horn) Rode the Almighty!
