The question of the existence of vampires has been raised repeatedly at all times. Legends, are they fiction or reality?

The famous French philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau, for example, believed in their existence without a shadow of a doubt. He relied on official recorded cases of vampirism, testimonies of priests, doctors and other respected people. It is worth noting that the level of education and self-awareness in the 18th century was slightly lower than that of modern scientists, so many are very lenient about such opinions. But, nevertheless, probably each of us has ever asked the question, do vampires really exist? Are so many legends, stories and even facts really just exaggeration and fiction?

Ancient legends about vampires

Legends about vampires still exist among many peoples of the world. For example, in China there is a widespread legend about Chang-Shin or, as he is also called, Kyang-Shi, who is described as a bloodthirsty dwarf who tears off the heads of his victims in order to drink their blood. Legends describe it as a small creature with large fangs, long claws and glowing eyes. He is not able to turn into a bat or mist, but, like most vampires, he is afraid of garlic, sharp sounds and salt, and is also able to fly. In India, people have created legends about rakshasa demons and female vampires who drink the blood of their victims.

It is worth noting that people are short and vampires are also small. The Japanese call their bloodthirsty creatures kappas. They look like children with a disgusting appearance, yellowish skin and webbed feet. Kappas drag their victims into the water and suck their blood. Among the peoples of South America, vampires are called lobischmen. They are also short with black teeth, hunchbacked and very bloodthirsty. Australian aborigines also mention bloodthirsty evil spirits.

According to their beliefs, Yara-ma-yha-sho roam the continent, which are small red big-headed men with toothless mouths. Since they have no teeth, they swallow their prey whole. The Portuguese have Brujas, the Indians have Jagar-khor, the Danes have Mara, in general, every nation has its own vampires. Is it really all fiction?

Let's turn to the facts, especially since there are modern cases of vampirism. For example, in 1967, a bloody tragedy occurred on board a fishing vessel. James Brown, an American sailor, was captured by the crew while drinking blood from the body of the victim, who was the second on this ship. James Brown was later charged with the murder of two more people, from whom he also drank blood. In the 40s of the 20th century, John George Haig was caught in London. He was also a murderer who performed vampiric rituals on his victims and then drowned their bodies in sulfuric acid. Not long ago, Toir Khamidov, a young Tajik who committed murder and vampire rituals on two men, was caught in Dushanbe. In his testimony, he mentioned that he acted on orders from the forces of evil.

Based on the cases described above, we can conclude that vampirism really exists. And scientists have been trying to give it a scientific explanation for several years now. In the 80s of the twentieth century, such a concept as porphyria appeared in the medical literature. Porphyria is a blood disease that is caused by impaired biosynthesis and heme metabolism. Porphyria manifests itself in the form of mental disorders of a person and increased sensitivity of the skin to ultraviolet radiation.

Particularly severe cases of porphyria are accompanied by the appearance in a person of symptoms similar to the hallmarks of a vampire. In people with severe porphyria, teeth become sharper, hair on the face and palms increases, photophobia increases extremely, and an irresistible thirst for blood arises. Only 60 cases of this disease are known in the world, however, according to Professor Tikkanen, it was precisely such cases in the past, overgrown with fictional additions, that formed the basis of legends about vampires.

The cause of photophobia in vampire-like people is the partial breakdown of hemoglobin under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. One of the breakdown products turns into a strong toxin that can corrode tissue from the inside. With prolonged exposure to sunlight on the skin of a patient with severe porphyria, the tissue begins to decompose. This process is accompanied by hellish pain and disturbances in the human psyche, as a result of which he develops a thirst for blood, with which he wants to replenish his losses in the tissues. Sometimes this thirst pushes people to kill for blood, and this happens in an unconscious state. In ancient times, there were famous cases when the sick hid in crypts during the day and went out hunting at night. In the fight against their fury, people used pitchforks, stakes and garlic. The smell of garlic in patients with this serious disease causes an exacerbation.

The nature of the occurrence of porphyria is not fully understood, but, according to scientists who worked in this direction, it is associated with heredity. Most often, cases of porphyria occur as a result of incest between close relatives. This disease appeared in people who lived far from civilization, in a small group leading a barbaric lifestyle.

According to doctors, porphyria is treatable. Using special medications, chemotherapy and regular blood transfusions can significantly relieve symptoms.

A hundred years ago, the fertile lands of Takara were ruled by the beautiful and kind ruler Akemi. All the inhabitants of Takara were happy and never knew either illness or hardship. Even the sun liked the girl, and on one of the holidays she received a priceless gift from the heavenly body - a pearl Necklace.

Thanks to this necklace, the princess could control sunlight. It happened that because of hot weather the harvest could die - then the girl ordered the Sun not to shine so much. It happened that Takara's traders returned from other kingdoms and lost their way - then the princess ordered the Sun to illuminate their way home. She wisely and fairly disposed of the solar gift, and her reign could have lasted for a very long time, if not for the envy of the ruler from the neighboring kingdom, Zhao.

Part 2. Zhao's trick.

Zhao vowed to kill the girl and take her necklace. He gathered thousands of soldiers, dressed them in the best armor, forged the sharpest swords for them, and attacked Takara under cover of darkness. But as soon as the first soldier set foot on the land of the kingdom, the bright Sun flashed in the sky. The armor and swords of the invaders turned into hot metal and the entire army was forced to abandon them and flee.

Then the insidious ruler decided to use a trick. He ordered his son Toshiro to infiltrate the princess's palace disguised as a musician and steal the necklace. And the obedient son did everything as his father ordered. He came to the gates of Akemi's palace and began to play his flute. The music was so beautiful. that the girl asked the guards to let the young man through and allow him to live in the palace. As soon as night fell, Toshiro snuck into the princess's bedroom, stole the jewel, and sneaked out of the palace unnoticed.

But he could not deliver the necklace to his father - Princess Stefanus’s faithful eagle owl caught up with him halfway along the way, tore the necklace out of his hands and soared up. The thread on which the pearls were held broke, and the pearls scattered throughout Takara's kingdom.

Part 3. Eternal darkness.

Since then, the earth has been covered in pitch darkness and no one has seen the Sun. Toshiro was never able to return home. He settled in the forest and for a long time fed on the blood of wild animals and lost people. It was he who became the progenitor of all vampires.

Princess Akemi tried for a long time to collect the necklace to return the sun to people, but she was never able to. Some claim that during the search she was torn to pieces by a pack of hungry wolves, others say that out of despair the girl threw herself off a cliff, others believe that their princess is still alive and continues her search. But no one knows for sure.

A hundred years have passed, but as before, people are trying to collect the pearl necklace and regain the Sun. Some of them devoted their entire lives to the search, becoming warriors of Light - paladins. Vampires are also hunting for pearls, their goal is to destroy the necklace and get rid of the Luminary forever.

Love and betrayal are an eternal theme
In any of the worlds of the vast Universe,
And in our history of this world
The deceit of people gave birth to vampires.

Only a hundred years have passed since everything happened,
But life has changed irrevocably since then.
Let's tell you about everything in order:
In Takara everyone lived peacefully and smoothly.
Although Queen Akemi is young,
They knew neither troubles nor hardships in Takara.

And even the Goddess of the all-powerful Sun
Akemi showed her favor.
The gift from the beautiful Goddess was priceless -
Pearl beads that gave strength.
And who owned the pearl necklace,
I could make the sun shine the way it needed.

No Zhao, ruler of a neighboring kingdom
Out of spiteful envy he conceived deceit.
Swore to kill Queen Akemi
And take possession of the witch's necklace.

King Jao gathered a mighty army
In armor made of the best metal in the world.
Swords sparkled that you couldn't find sharper,
But the power of the necklace is much stronger.
Only an army set foot on the lands of Takara,
How the bright sun instantly blinded them.
The armor and swords were red hot,
And the soldiers all immediately fled.

Since Takara's power cannot be taken over,
Zhao decided to defeat everyone by cunning.
He sent his son Toshiro to Akemi
With the order: “Steal the necklace from the palace!”

Toshiro didn't dare not listen to his father
And now he is already near the windows of the palace.
He plays gentle songs on the flute,
And there is no more wonderful music in the world.
And there was so much talent in his playing,
What Akemi said to let the musician in.

That same night the son fulfilled his father's request
And, having stolen the necklace, he fled from the palace.
But no matter how fast Toshiro ran,
The faithful eagle owl Stefanus caught up with the thief.
And snatching bright beads from vile hands,
Soared into the clouds to return to Akemi.
But claws and thread are not the best pair.
Pearls scattered across the lands of Takara.

Since then, the world has been covered in pitch darkness
And the sun disappeared from the sky forever.
Toshiro got lost in the forests and swamps
And he survived by feeding only on the blood of animals.
He became the progenitor of the first vampires,
Those to whom darkness gave the power of the night.

Akemi dreamed of returning the necklace
And I looked for pearls in the mountains and gorges.
But a hundred years have passed since then,
And there is no news from the queen at all,
In Takara, many residents believe
Queen Akemi is still alive today.
After collecting the necklace, Akemi will return.
And again the Sun will shine over Takara!

Toshiro's action brought a lot of trouble.
A hundred joyless years passed in darkness.
In Takara, the people have already become united in spirit.
So little difference. Vampire, paladin...
Only higher powers cannot sleep,
In the hope of pitting the two races against each other.
Now you have to make a choice
Which path to choose in this long struggle.

Excerpt characterizing The Legend of the Vampire (manga)

Now only Pierre understood the full power of human vitality and the saving power of moving attention invested in a person, similar to that saving valve in steam engines that releases excess steam as soon as its density exceeds a known norm.
He did not see or hear how the backward prisoners were shot, although more than a hundred of them had already died in this way. He did not think about Karataev, who was weakening every day and, obviously, was soon to suffer the same fate. Pierre thought even less about himself. The more difficult his situation became, the more terrible the future was, the more, regardless of the situation in which he was, joyful and soothing thoughts, memories and ideas came to him.

On the 22nd, at noon, Pierre was walking uphill along a dirty, slippery road, looking at his feet and at the unevenness of the path. From time to time he glanced at the familiar crowd surrounding him, and again at his feet. Both were equally his own and familiar to him. The lilac, bow-legged Gray ran merrily along the side of the road, occasionally, as proof of his agility and contentment, tucking his hind paw and jumping on three and then again on all four, rushing and barking at the crows that were sitting on the carrion. Gray was more fun and smoother than in Moscow. On all sides lay the meat of various animals - from human to horse, in varying degrees of decomposition; and the wolves were kept away by the walking people, so Gray could eat as much as he wanted.
It had been raining since the morning, and it seemed that it would pass and clear the sky, but after a short stop the rain began to fall even more heavily. The rain-saturated road no longer absorbed water, and streams flowed along the ruts.
Pierre walked, looking around, counting steps in threes, and counting on his fingers. Turning to the rain, he internally said: come on, come on, give it more, give it more.
It seemed to him that he was not thinking about anything; but far and deep somewhere his soul thought something important and comforting. This was something of a subtle spiritual extract from his conversation with Karataev yesterday.
Yesterday, at a night halt, chilled by the extinguished fire, Pierre stood up and moved to the nearest, better-burning fire. By the fire, to which he approached, Plato was sitting, covering his head with an overcoat like a chasuble, and telling the soldiers in his argumentative, pleasant, but weak, painful voice a story familiar to Pierre. It was already past midnight. This was the time at which Karataev usually recovered from a feverish attack and was especially animated. Approaching the fire and hearing Plato’s weak, painful voice and seeing his pitiful face brightly illuminated by the fire, something unpleasantly pricked Pierre’s heart. He was frightened by his pity for this man and wanted to leave, but there was no other fire, and Pierre, trying not to look at Plato, sat down near the fire.

Often there are true stories full of pain and suffering. Horrible crimes committed in the distant past have taken the form of a legend or a story told around a campfire. Who are vampires? History tells us about various events related to them. Some events remained unchanged, while others lost their former appearance forever. And that is why it is so difficult to distinguish truth from fiction.

Vampires of Ancient Egypt

Who are vampires? The history of Ancient Egypt tells of dead people returning from the world, whose death was so shameful that they could not get to the Afterlife. One of them, dated to the 3rd century. BC e., tells the story of a young man named Azeneth, who fled from the battlefield, abandoning his post. Enemies overtook him and chopped up his body, leaving him to rot in the sand. After some time, Azenet began to appear to his relatives, demanding to be allowed into the house. The victim of this spirit was the traitor's bride, who herself came out to him. Archaeologists discovered this story on the walls of the tomb of a poor girl whose lower jaw was missing from her skull.

Daughters of the Dark Moon

If we take a closer look at the past, stories of bloodthirsts can be traced back to ancient Greece. The Greek word for vampire is empousa. Mention of these creatures can be found in the works of some philosophers. For example, Philostratus in his work “The Life of Apollonius of Tyana” describes the story that happened to the Lycian Menippus.

According to this story, during the journey the young man met a beautiful stranger who so captured his fantasies that Menippus was ready to marry her. The philosopher's student began to spend every night in the ruins, in which, as he claimed, the chambers of his beloved were located. Only the intervention of his teacher saved the Lycian. Apollonius exorcised the ghost, and described everything that happened in his writings.
The story of vampires could have happened in reality.

It is known that from the 5th to the 3rd centuries BC. e. On the territory of Greece and Rome there was a cult of fans of Hecate. Investigation reports have survived to this day with mention of bloody rituals in which priestesses drank blood. Perhaps it was these stories that became part of the legends about vampirism.

Legends of Ancient Europe

Europeans sincerely believed in the existence of vampires. Often this belief was based on medieval fears of a variety of diseases that deformed bodies. The raging epidemics not only claimed thousands of lives, they filled the consciousness with facts about non-decomposing remains, tetanus and external deformities.

This is probably why modern scientists find so many graves with evidence of the ritual burial of those convicted of vampirism. So, during excavations in the county of Dorset, strange ritual burials were discovered, among them was the corpse of a woman, the body rested on the remains of animals that followed the contours of her body. The cervical vertebrae were broken, and the head was separated from the body, the legs rested on animal limbs. Based on the results of the research, scientists came to the conclusion that the woman was killed during the period when residents were leaving the village.

Vampirism is a creature of plague

Who are vampires? The story tells that in 2009, the Italian archaeologist Matteo Borrini discovered the burial of a vampire in the vicinity of the city of Venice. The historical period to which the remains belong was marked by a plague epidemic. The terrible events of that time are reflected in many sources. Due to mass hysteria, belief in otherworldly evil forces pushed people to desperate acts. An elderly woman was buried in a mass burial ground. A piece of brick was placed in her mouth, which, according to legend, prevented the vampire from attacking the living.

One of the legends of that period tells about a wealthy lady who lived in the 16th century. Her name was Beatrice Dandolo, and she lived her married life on a family estate near Pisa. The woman was famous for her beauty; her husband spared no expense on clothes and jewelry to show off to his neighbors. When the plague began to take lives, Beatrice's husband became one of the first victims. The woman, afraid of losing her beauty and health, locked herself in one of the wings of the castle. She gave the order to wall up the entrance. Her voluntary seclusion gave rise to many legends that in fact the woman got involved with dark magic and performed rituals on blood, wanting to save herself.

Subsequently, the story of Beatrice Dandolo was used to create the storyline of the film “The Brothers Grimm”. When creating the outfit for the image of the Mirror Queen, the costume designers partially relied on portraits of Beatrice.

Vampire from Wurzburg

Who are vampires? The history of the legend of the 30s of the 19th century tells that on the territory of Bavaria there were also events related to vampires. Dr. Heinrich Spatz lived in the city of Würzburg. He was a respected, worthy man. As a practicing physician, he published several works on medicine that became part of world practice. But some facts of his life story suggest his involvement in the Nosferatu clan.

According to the data, the doctor had his own medical practice and was responsible for a hospital for the poor. For a long time, the Spatz couple did not attract much attention. But after the doctor quit his job and left the city, the police received alarming news about missing people. The doctor's former assistants said they could prove the doctor's involvement in the disappearance of Joachim Feber, who was a gatekeeper at the hospital. After a search of the former hospital, many bodies were found, one of them had a characteristic feature by which the missing Feber was identified. It was not possible to find a doctor. But, according to the protocols, one of the assistants who reported on him died under mysterious circumstances.

Bloody secrets of Bulgaria

Who are vampires? The history of the Bulgarians and their beliefs are also no less interesting. According to folk legends, a very evil person becomes a vampire. Moreover, it concerned exclusively men suspected of witchcraft. After death, such a person had his heart pierced with a steel rod or

Who are vampires? The origin story suggests that they really existed. This is evidenced by excavations carried out by scientists near the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The skeletons of two men were found in a stone grave, their chests pierced with steel bars. Similar strange graves have been found before, but in this case it was possible to more fully restore the whole picture due to the good preservation of the remains.

Myths about vampires of Siberia

Who are vampires? The history of the emergence of these creatures is also relevant in Siberian lands. In 1725, the peasant Pyotr Plogoevits died suddenly and was buried in his native village of Kizilov. After some time, Peter’s fellow villagers began to die. The local authorities were alarmed by the fact that in their dying confession they all said that the cause of their illness was constant visits from a Siberian vampire.

Due to pressure from the village population, it was decided to open the peasant’s grave. Imagine the surprise of the inspector who arrived to oversee the exhumation procedure when it turned out that the body of the deceased had undergone almost no changes. These facts were stated in the inspector's report. The villagers took action by driving a stake into Peter's heart and setting his body on fire.

Curse of the Dark Continent

The history of vampires is a creation not only. The inhabitants of Africa also keep many analogues in their epic. In their folklore there is a creature called "fifole". It is a rejected soul that wanders among the human world, attacking the weak and infants. Many of the African tribes keep legends about how a witch cursed a person for his misdeeds, forcing him to drink the blood of loved ones. They took these superstitions with them to America as slaves.

Who are vampires? The history of the appearance speaks of one of the documentary references to such a created vampire, which dates back to 1729. The incident occurred in the state of Virginia at the villa of Gregory Wattstock, a wealthy landowner. By order of his wife, one of the young servants was severely flogged. Due to the severity of the punishment, the child died. His mother was known as a powerful witch among black slaves. Allegedly, she placed a curse on the entire plantation owner's family.

A common disease at that time was consumption, which soon claimed the life of Mrs. Wattstock. Some time later, her eldest daughter died mysteriously. And the youngest son complained to the priest that before her death, their deceased mother visited her sister. After this statement, the relatives visited the cemetery and burned the corpses, which was documented by the Reverend Father.

Who are vampires? The history of creation is very interesting and exciting. But in the modern world, the image of a vampire has changed in many ways. He was given a touch of piquancy and gloss. But do not forget that behind all the tinsel lies a completely unattractive content.
