November 4 is the feast of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and the Day of National Unity...
The celebration of the Most Holy Theotokos, in honor of Her icon, called, was established in gratitude for the deliverance of Moscow and all of Russia from the invasion of the Poles in 1612. The end of the sixteenth and beginning of the seventeenth centuries are known in the history of Russia as. The country was attacked by Polish troops, who mocked the Orthodox faith, plundered and burned churches, cities and villages. They managed to capture Moscow by deception. At the call, the Russian people stood up to defend their homeland. A miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin Mary was sent from Kazan to the militia, which was headed by Prince Dimitry Mikhailovich Pozharsky.
Knowing that the disaster was caused by sins, the militia members imposed a three-day fast on themselves and prayerfully turned to the Lord and His Most Pure Mother for heavenly help. The prayer was answered. From Saint Arseny (later Bishop of Suzdal), who was in captivity among the Poles, news came that it was revealed to him in a vision that God’s judgment would change to mercy, through the intercession of the Most Holy Virgin.
Inspired by the news, Russian troops took China Town by storm on October 22, 1612, almost completely establishing control over Moscow (the Poles locked themselves in the Kremlin and surrendered a month later to the mercy of the winner). In memory of this event, the celebration of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was established.
Let us recall that the icon of the Mother of God was revealed in 1579 in Kazan, shortly before (in 1552) the capital of the Kazan Khanate conquered by Tsar Ivan the Terrible. The discovery of the icon took place with the direct participation of the holy martyr Hermogenes, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia (1606-12), at that time a parish priest, who compiled a troparion for the icon “The Zealous Intercessor.” He blessed the militia of Minin and Pozharsky to take as their Patroness the icon of the Kazan Mother of God, which was in the camp of their army.

The celebration of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, established in memory of the first victory, was initially carried out only in Moscow, but in 1649, by order of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, in honor of the birth of the heir Demetrius during the all-night vigil under the Kazan, it was stated “to celebrate the Kazan Icon in all cities throughout years,” which has been done ever since. Immediately after the end of the Troubles, Prince Dmitry Pozharsky built a temple in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God on Red Square in Moscow, where a copy of the icon was placed. The original icon was kept in Kazan until 1904, when the shrine was stolen by attackers and its fate has since been unknown.
The idea to celebrate November 4 as National Unity Day was expressed by the Interreligious Council of Russia in September 2004. It was supported by the Duma Committee on Labor and Social Policy, and thus acquired the status of a Duma initiative. On September 29, 2004, Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy publicly supported the initiative of the Duma to establish a celebration on November 4. “This day reminds us how in 1612 Russians of different faiths and nationalities overcame division, overcame a formidable enemy and led the country to a stable civil peace.”, Patriarch Alexy said then.
On November 23, 2004, members of the Presidium of the Interreligious Council of Russia addressed the Chairman of the State Duma, Boris Gryzlov, with a request to consider the Council’s statement on establishing the date November 4 as a holiday. The Council supported the initiative to introduce a new holiday. The corresponding appeal, along with the text of the statement, was distributed in the Duma in connection with the consideration in the first reading of amendments to the Labor Code of the Russian Federation related to the revision of holiday dates. “We believe that the day of the tragic division of Russia - November 7 - did not become a day of reconciliation and agreement,”- the appeal says. Members of the Interreligious Council of Russia believe that the events that followed “led to the death of millions of our fellow citizens, while the liberation of Moscow from foreign invaders in 1612 united the people and stopped the fratricidal bloodshed.” At the Duma meeting, the bill was adopted in the first reading. Only the communists opposed it.
Since 2005, National Unity Day has been celebrated annually.

Days of celebration
The veneration of the icon takes place 2 times a year: July 21 (“summer Kazan”) and November 4 (“autumn Kazan”) - according to the new style.

That year in Kazan the sun scorched mercilessly - there was no rain. And one day a fire started that destroyed both the Orthodox church and part of the homes of the local population.
Diniil Onuchin lived in this city, whose daughter Matrona grew up - a difficult girl. On the first night after the fire, she dreamed of the Mother of God, who indicated the place where the icon was located. And when, after some distrust on the part of the adults, they finally obeyed and unearthed the find, they really found the face of the Kazan Mother of God, who protected and helped cope with the consequences of the disaster, and after that performed many more miracles.
And in October (old style) 1612, thanks to the intercession of the Mother of God, Moscow was liberated from Polish-Lithuanian troops. The Russian militia was led by Minin and Pozharsky, who before the decisive clash prayed at the face of the Kazan Queen of Heaven.
From that moment on, it was established to celebrate the celebration of autumn Kazan throughout Russia (November 4 - according to the new style). And since 2005, this day has been called National Unity Day in the country.

And the enemies left. This was in the autumn of 1612. And from that event they also began to celebrate an Orthodox holiday in honor of the icon.

Troparion to the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God: a short miraculous prayer
The miraculous image of the Mother of God of Kazan, whose troparion calls Her a zealous Intercessor and Divine protection to all who come to her for help, appeared in the city of Kazan in the 16th century. At night, in a dream, the Queen of Heaven appeared to a nine-year-old girl named Matrona and pointed to the place where her icon was kept. The child told her parents about this, who chalked it all up to her imagination, but the phenomenon began to recur regularly. Then Matrona’s father and mother followed their daughter, and at the place she indicated they actually found an ancient image of the Mother of God of Kazan, whose troparion today helps believers get rid of sorrows and misfortunes.
It is not for nothing that the Mother of God of Kazan is glorified in the troparion as the Intercessor and the Intercessor - there are several cases when she saved not only individual people, but the entire Russian state from destructive vacillation. In 1579, when the newly found shrine of the Kazan Mother of God was delivered to the temple in Kazan, a miracle of healing one of the parishioners from blindness occurred. The Holy Icon of Kazan is considered to heal not only from blindness of the eyes, but also from spiritual blindness. It has become a tradition to bless young couples for a happy married life with the icon of the Kazan Mother of God.
In Orthodox churches, during solemn services dedicated to the glorification of the miraculous Kazan image of the Mother of God, a troparion is performed to the icon of the Kazan Mother of God, Helper and Intercessor of the entire human race. In 1612, with prayers to this miraculous icon, a Russian regiment led by Minin and Pozharsky liberated Moscow from the Polish-Lithuanian invaders. Let us come, people, to this quiet and good refuge, the quick Helper, the ready and warm salvation, the protection of the Virgin: let us hasten to prayer and sweat to repentance: for the Most Pure Mother of God exudes unto us boundless mercies, advances to our aid and delivers from great troubles and evils the well-behaved and His God-fearing servants.
