Orthodox Rus' was often raided and devastated by enemy forces. But she always rose from the ashes and blossomed with even greater strength. It is no coincidence that many miraculous icons appeared on these lands. Among the images of the Mother of God, the Peschanskaya Icon, which became famous among the people for its miracles, is of particular importance.

The history of the painting of the holy face

The holy image of the Virgin Mary was copied from the Kazan icon. According to legend, Saint Joseph, who was the bishop of Belgorod at that time, and was quite ill, saw in a dream an icon lying on a garbage heap in the vestibule of one of the churches. A special radiance emanated from it and the voice of the Mother of God said that this icon was intended for the whole country, as exuding divine grace. And the church ministers violated the holy face in such a way.

Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Peschanskaya”

Having traveled from Kursk to Mariupol, shortly before his death, the bishop was surprised to find exactly such an icon in the Church of the Resurrection in the city of Izyum. The holy image was used as a vestibule, behind which burnt incense coals were thrown. The saint strictly reprimanded the priests of the local parish for their disdainful attitude towards the image of the Mother of God and ordered them to find a more worthy place for the icon. The face was immediately placed in the icon case. Joseph spent three days in the city and every day - morning and evening - he came to church and prayed fervently before the image of the Most Pure Virgin Mary.

In 1792, the church was moved from the suburbs to Peski. Rumor spread among the people about the appearance of the miraculous icon and crowds of pilgrims began to flock to it.

On a note! Religious processions were held with the Peschansky icon more than once during the raging cholera epidemic, after which the disease subsided. At the prayers of believers, numerous miracles of healing were performed in front of the image.

After the 1917 revolution, the icon was sent abroad and its trace was lost. But the miraculous image was found again, and they also found a list donated to the church by Emperor Nicholas II.

Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God and the fate of the Russian Empire

The small Ukrainian town of Izyum, located in the settlement of Peski, became home to the icon of the Mother of God, which was once brought to these parts. Forgotten by everyone, by providence from above she was found again with the help of St. Joseph of Belgorod.

Tsar Nicholas II glorified the saint, but for the first time a message of gratitude to Joseph of Belgorod was expressed by Emperor Alexander III, who believed that only thanks to the prayers and intercession of Saint Joseph the royal family survived after the railway accident in Borki in 1888.

All members of the imperial family actively contributed to the preparation of the canonization of Joseph of Belgorod. In 1911, the Tsar and his entire family were going to attend this event. But at this time, Prime Minister P. A. Stolypin was killed. Tsar Nicholas decided to stay at the funeral, which coincided with the canonization celebration in Belgorod.

A year later, according to the testimony of one military doctor with the rank of colonel, Saint Joseph appeared to him in a dream, where, taking him by the hand, he led him to a mountain from which the entire Russian land, drowned in blood, could be seen. According to the doctor, he heard the roar of military guns and human screams. The blood ran cold from horror. He began to frantically pray at the feet of the elder, after which Saint Joseph said that this was not yet, but it would soon be and everyone needed to repent.

Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God

In 1912 Russia was in a state of prosperity. Guards parades were noisy, fairs were fun. No signs of trouble. But only a few years passed and many tsarist officers were killed on the battlefields.

In 1914, at the height of the armed confrontation, the saint again appeared to the same military doctor, in response to his prayers for the salvation of his homeland. He gave parting instructions in which he ordered to go around the front line with the icons of the Mother of God of Vladimir and Peschanskaya. But when the colonel tried to convey this to the public, no one believed him. Moreover, the doctor was considered to have lost his mind and was almost sent to a mental hospital. Only Father Alexander Malyarevsky, a respected St. Petersburg archpriest, assisted in this matter and himself went to Prince Zhevakhov. Nikolai Davydovich was entrusted with a responsible mission - to go to Peschanskaya Sloboda and deliver the icon of the Mother of God to the front line.

Alexandra Fedorovna herself took part in the process of searching for and delivering the ancient icon to the Headquarters of the Tsarist Army. But the religious procession with the holy image along the line of hostilities never took place. This is due to the actions of people who were subsequently involved in a conspiracy against the Tsar. The icon returned to Izyum. On December 15, 1915, Zhevakhov took her away from the Emperor’s Headquarters.

As is known, subversive activities according to Parvus’s plan were in an unstable state for a whole year. But in the second half of December 1915, Parvus received funding in Berlin for further actions.

A massive campaign to overthrow the tsarist government began in Russia. What is this? A fatal coincidence or a direct consequence of the failure to fulfill the Lord’s will, expressed through the appearance of St. Joseph to a military doctor? One thing is clear: after the icon left Headquarters, the fate of Russia was predetermined. The Empire has fallen.

Description of the icon

The Peschanskaya icon has similarities with the Kazan Mother of God. It is made according to the “Guide” type. In the image, the child sits on the Virgin's left hand, holding a book, which is a source of knowledge. The Virgin Mary extends her palm to her Son.

The Son of God sits on Mary's left hand. This symbolizes the support that Jesus found in the person of his Mother in earthly life. The Mother of God points her palm at her Son. He raised his right hand in a blessing gesture, while his left hand rests on his knees and holds a closed book. The soles of the feet are visible from under the clothes, and the head is bowed towards the Virgin Mary.

Location of the icon

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the icon was in the Holy Ascension Cathedral. The image remained in the Izyum monastery for a long time, but the events of the October Revolution caused the disappearance of the ancient icon. Believers could only contemplate copies copied from the original.

The miraculous Peschansky image of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the city of Izium

But, many years later, the original returned to its place within the walls of its native church, and every parishioner now has the opportunity to pray before the Peschanskaya Mother of God.

On a note! The Day of Remembrance of the Peschanskaya Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos is celebrated on July 21, by reading akathists to the shrine in a solemn atmosphere.

The meaning of the icon, what it helps with

The image is of great importance for Russians and Orthodox Christians in general. During hard times, the icon more than once saved people from epidemics and death during wars.

The image of the Virgin Mary “Peschanskaya” patronizes the wives of soldiers, protecting husbands participating in armed conflicts. She heals serious illnesses. To those who sincerely pray, the Mother of God will always give a helping hand and guide them on the right path in difficult situations, and deliver them from troubles, needs and disasters.

People suffering from addictions turn to her.

Important! In Orthodox culture, the icon is recognized as miraculous, and the owners of its copies claim that a powerful stream of divine grace emanates from the holy image, which works miracles at the requests of believers.

Miracles of the Holy Face

The image of the Virgin Mary “Peschanskaya” was very revered in the Orthodox world. The royal family specially came to Ukraine to pray before the icon of the Mother of God in Izyum. It is believed that this particular shrine patronizes Russia and is capable of protecting it from terrible bad weather.

During the Great Patriotic War, after walking around the front line with the icon, human losses decreased sharply. Old-timers claim that the Germans even retreated and Soviet troops successfully recaptured their native lands.

Father Nikolai Guryanov, a very revered elder, called for a religious procession within the borders of all of Russia. This was done on a special plane flight, and in 1999 the devastation in the country ceased and a period of gradual restoration began.

During the Chechen war, the list of the Peschanskaya Icon was taken to the combat zone 8 times by a minister of one of the Moscow churches.

For the miracles that occurred after prayers in front of the icon, believers left numerous decorations as gifts. From them a golden robe was cast for the shrine.

Important! Many amazing events related to the veneration of the shrine have occurred and continue to occur in the Orthodox world. It is for this reason that she is especially loved by believers in Russia.

Film about the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God

The icon of the Mother of God, called Peschansky, is known as one of the miraculous copies of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. His appearance is closely connected with the name of Saint Joseph, Bishop of Belgorod.

The entire life of Saint Joasaph passed under the miraculous, vigilant protection of the Mother of God, which is why the prophetic dream he saw in Belgorod before leaving on a journey to survey his diocese was so deeply imprinted in his soul. He dreamed of the porch of a certain church, where in a pile of rubbish lay a brightly shining image of the Most Pure Virgin. A voice came to him from the icon: “Look what the servants of this temple have done to My face. My image is destined for the entire country as a source of grace, but they have cast it into rubbish!”

While inspecting the churches in the lands entrusted to him, Saint Joasaph carefully examined the porches. Arriving in the city of Izyum, Kharkov province, he went to the Church of the Ascension in Zamosc (city suburb) and there he recognized the icon that he had seen in a dream. The icon stood in the corner of the vestibule and served as a partition behind which coal for the censer was poured. The saint, falling to his knees, exclaimed: “Queen of Heaven! Forgive the negligence of Your servants - they don’t know what they are doing!” Then he ordered the image to be placed in a large icon case behind the left choir.

Saint Joseph stayed in Izium for more than three days. Every morning and evening he came to the Church of the Ascension and prayed before the image of the Mother of God. The news of the bishop's special attention to the icon quickly spread among the residents of Izyum and many began to resort to this image as having a special grace. All who turned to the Lady of the world with faith and prayer received from this image the fulfillment of what they asked for. Then the news about the church in which the wondrous image of the Mother of God is kept spread far beyond Izyum, and numerous crowds of sufferers began to flock to the Church of the Ascension. And the Most Pure Virgin lived up to the expectations of those who honor Her all-honorable name.

The Peschanskaya Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos became famous for many miracles.

At the end of the 18th - beginning of the 19th centuries, a local teacher, Stefan Gelevsky, lived in Izium with his wife, who had a hard cross in life - children in the Gelevsky family died at an early age. The last child left alive was his beloved son Peter, but he too became seriously ill. In the hour of testing, the Gelevskys did not lose hope for a successful outcome of the baby’s illness and, trusting in the mercy of God, they decided to serve a prayer service for Peter’s health in front of the image of the Mother of God on the Sands. But they were not destined to bring their son to the temple alive. On the way to Peski, Peter died. Broken by such a blow, the mother wanted to return back, but her husband insisted on keeping his promise. Arriving in Peski, the Gelevskys, without telling anyone about the death of the child, asked the priest to serve a prayer service in front of the holy icon. During this time, the parents from the bottom of their hearts begged the All-Merciful Intercessor to console them in the grief that befell them. And their faith was not put to shame. When the kontakion “Oh, All-Singing Mother...” was read for the third time, the child, until then lifeless, suddenly screamed so loudly that it horrified everyone present in the temple, and the mother and father lost consciousness. Having come to their senses, they told how their son died on the road, but before the miraculous icon he came to life through the intercession and prayers of the Queen of Heaven. Later, having listened to the Liturgy with fervent prayer and trembling of soul and having given baby Peter the Holy Mysteries, they returned home joyfully. This baby soon recovered completely and grew into a completely healthy child. As an adult, Peter rose to the rank of colonel in St. Petersburg and died in old age.

The rumor about the resurrection of the baby soon spread and began to attract new crowds of believers, especially residents of Izyum, to the temple on Peski. The church and the fence were overcrowded with people who came to pray at the miraculous image, so the priest did not have time to serve prayer services. At this time, in Izyum, the dean and main member of the Spiritual Board was the cathedral archpriest Joasaph Pogorlevsky. Having fallen into temptation, he forbade the Sandy clergyman to serve before the image to outsiders, visiting pilgrims. But this prohibition, according to the inscrutable ways of God’s Providence, served to even greater veneration of the icon of the Mother of God.

Soon, Archpriest Pogorlevsky fell ill with a painful illness: he was overcome by convulsions and writhing throughout his body, accompanied by terrible pain, intensifying with the slightest movement. Suffering greatly, the patient came to the conviction that this illness was sent to him by God because of the order he had made. Realizing his guilt, he decided to turn to the Healer of all diseases and ordered to be carried to the miraculous image of the Mother of God on the Sands. Brought to the church on sheets and placed in front of the icon, during the prayer singing he fervently prayed to the Most Holy Theotokos, asking for forgiveness and recovery. At the end of the prayer service, the patient venerated the image and immediately felt such relief that he himself, without outside help, left the temple.

In 1792, at the request of the local population, the Church of the Ascension, together with the icon, was moved from Zamosc to Piski, where it was no longer threatened by floods of the Donets River. In this regard, the icon of the Mother of God received the name “Peschanskaya”.

In 1819, due to the dilapidation of the wooden Ascension Church in Peski, parishioners began the construction of a new stone church, which was stopped for a long time due to disagreements between its creators. At this time, the wife of a wealthy landowner, Catherine, died, who had a special reverence for the Peschanskaya Icon and donated a massive silver gilded chasuble for its decoration. Before her death, she begged her husband, who due to his stinginess did not want to take part in the construction of the temple, to finish its construction. And soon after the death of his wife, he decided to complete the construction only at his own expense. He told the rector of the temple, Archpriest Lev Yarovoy, that his wife appeared to him in a dream in the very dress in which she was buried, and asked him, leaving his stinginess, to build a temple for the Queen of Heaven for the sake of saving his soul, adding that for the chasuble made for the icon She was honored by the Queen of Heaven to receive great relief in the afterlife. This vision was repeated three times, and for the last time the wife appeared with the Peschanskaya Icon, from which shining rays emanated. In 1826, a new stone church was built and equipped with everything necessary. Due to a change in the building plan, the miraculous icon was placed in an icon case on the left side of the iconostasis.

In 1830, a cholera epidemic began in Izyum, and in this nationwide disaster, the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God became a true consolation for all residents of the city and surrounding area. Residents of Izyum raised the miraculous icon, solemnly brought it to the main city square and served a touching prayer service in front of it. Then they walked around all the streets and houses with the icon, sprinkling them with holy water and offering fervent prayers to the Queen of Heaven for an end to the severe illness. Literally in a matter of days, the epidemic retreated from the city.

In 1915, at the height of the First World War, two Orthodox people had the appearance of St. Joasaph, who addressed them with the words: “Only the Mother of God can now save Russia.” And he ordered a religious procession with a miraculous image to be scheduled for the blessing of the Russian army and a favorable outcome of the war for Russia. The Peschanskaya icon was delivered to the headquarters of the command of our military formations on October 4, 1915 and remained there until mid-December. According to Prince N.D. Zhevakhov, “during the stay of the shrine at Headquarters there were not only no defeats at the front, but, on the contrary, there were only victories, as anyone who checks this fact can verify from telegrams from the front since 4 October to December 15, 1915." The religious procession along the front line, however, never took place. And only many years later, in the summer of 1999, the behest of St. Joasaph was finally fulfilled, when, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Rus', a unique religious procession took place on an airplane, in which the icon of the Peschanskaya Mother of God took part, but no longer along the line front of the First World War, and along the border of the Russian Federation.

Nowadays there is a list of the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God in Moscow. In honor of this blessed shrine, a temple in Izmailovo was consecrated.

In the carved icon case there is no longer room for offerings: rings, chains, necklaces are left as gifts to the Lady of the World by parishioners who have received healing from fatal diseases, resolved hopeless situations, and are grateful to the Mother of God for saving their loved ones.

The shrine was also venerated by the famous elder Father Nikolai Guryanov (“father from the island”), who, shortly before his death in 2002, commanded in difficult circumstances to walk with this icon around the house, work building or inside the apartment, reading a prayer and asking for the pacification of the situation.

Most Holy Theotokos, save us!

Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God

The image of the Mother of God, called Peschansky, was revealed to the great Russian Saint Joasaph, Bishop of Belgorod. In the year of his blessed death (1754), Saint Joasaph traveled around the diocese, and on the eve of leaving Belgorod he had a dream: as if he was examining churches and in one of them, in the vestibule, on a pile of garbage, he saw an icon of the Mother of God with the Child with a bright radiance emanating from it; and a voice was heard: Look what the servants of this temple have done to My face. My image was appointed for this country as a source of grace, but they cast it into rubbish.

Upon arrival in the city of Izyum, Kharkov province, the bishop visited the Church of the Resurrection and was amazed to find in it the icon he had seen in a dream. The icon was neglected and served as a partition in the vestibule, behind which coal was poured for the censer. By order of the saint, the icon was placed in a large icon case and placed in its proper place. Saint Joasaph lived in Izyum for more than three days, and every morning and evening he came to the Church of the Resurrection and prayed before the image of the Mother of God.

In 1792, the Church of the Resurrection was moved from Zamość to a higher area in Piski, where the icon was sent, attracting more and more veneration and reverence from parishioners and surrounding residents.

Around 1800, a local school teacher, Stefan Gelevsky, lived in Izyum, whose children were dying; Finally, the last one, son Peter, fell ill. Without losing hope in God's mercy, the parents promised to serve a prayer service before the image of the Mother of God on the Sands. On the way to the Ascension Church, their son died. The mother wanted to return back, but the father insisted on fulfilling this vow. Without telling anyone about the death of the child, during a prayer service they tearfully begged the Mother of God to become their comforter. And by faith their miracle happened! When reading the kontakion “O All-Singing Mother...” for the third time, the child, until then lifeless, suddenly screamed so loudly that it horrified everyone present; father and mother lost consciousness. Having come to their senses, they told how their son died on the way, but came to life in front of the icon at the intercession of the Queen of Heaven. Their baby recovered, grew up and then lived in St. Petersburg until old age.

It was natural to expect that rumors of such an extraordinary event would quickly spread. Crowds of pilgrims began to flock to the miraculous icon, overflowing not only the Church of the Resurrection, but also the fence, so that the priest did not have time to serve prayer services. On the part of the dean of the cathedral archpriest Joasaph Pogorlevsky, there was a ban on prayer singing in front of the Peschanskaya icon. Soon Archpriest Pogorlevsky fell ill with a painful illness: he lived with convulsions and writhing of all his limbs. Realizing his guilt and repenting, Pogorlevsky was forced to ask the Most Holy Theotokos for forgiveness and healing of his illness, when he was brought broken and sick on sheets and laid in front of the Peschanskaya Icon. At the end of the prayer service, he felt relief, and after a few days he recovered and no longer forbade prayer singing before the miraculous image.

Subsequently, the entire 19th century was marked by help and many miraculous healings taking place at the Peschansky miraculous image of the Mother of God. So in 1830, after a prayer service and procession with the Peschanskaya Icon, the cholera epidemic in the city of Izyum and its environs was stopped. There are known cases of the sight of the blind, the healing of typhus and cancer patients, seizures and paralysis. A remarkable case is the miraculous healing of the wife of the titular councilor, Yulia Petrovna Zhivkovich, which occurred in 1901. Zhivkovich suffered from paralysis of her legs for about three years, and her left leg was twisted and as if dead, both legs hung as if severed, as a result of which she could neither stand nor walk, and she was carried and carried in a chair. She turned to famous doctors, was treated by prof. Bekhterev and doctor Pobitovsky, but all in vain. Leaving treatment, she returned to her estate in the Kharkov region. The Peschanskaya Icon was brought here at the request of Zhivkovich. During a prayer service with an akathist, the patient felt a push in her left arm and was able to move her left leg. After the prayer service, she, getting up from her chair, was able to approach the image and reverently venerated it, then exclaiming with tears of joy: “I got up, I walked, I’m standing myself!” Suddenly, the table on which the icon stood (weighing more than 3 pounds with the icon case) broke, and the icon fell on the floor with a strong knock, without breaking. The healed woman turned to the sound of the icon’s blow, approached it and bowed to the ground! After which she, lightly supported, was able to walk around all the rooms.

It was God's will that the miraculous Peschansky icon come to the aid of Russia at one of the difficult moments in its history, at the very height of the First World War, and was... rejected.

Saint Joasaph of Belgorod in 1914 appeared in visions simultaneously to one pious elder living in the village. Sands, and Colonel O., who was then at the front. The saint ordered that the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God be delivered to the front along with the Vladimir Icon - the saint’s maternal blessing for monasticism, and as long as they remain there, until then the mercy of the Lord will not leave Russia. The Mother of God is pleased to walk along the front lines and cover him with her omophorion from enemy attacks. It was also said that now only the Mother of God could help people and atone for their sins at the Throne of the Most High and save Russia. After long ordeals, Colonel O. was able to get to the capital and found in it the Brotherhood of St. Joasaph of Belgorod, whose active members Archpriest A.I. Malyarevsky and Prince N.D. Zhevakhov believed his excited story. Having obtained the personal order of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, Prince Zhevakhov took the icons to headquarters. Crowded religious processions accompanied the train's journey from Kharkov. And the icons were received in a completely different way in Mogilev: there was no religious procession, the Emperor was not informed about the arrival of the passage from Kharkov, and the prince was told that there was no time to deal with trifles at headquarters. However, a short meeting between Prince Zhevakhov and the Sovereign took place, after which the icons were left at headquarters for several months until the end of 1915, but a religious procession with them along the front lines did not take place. Prince Zhevakhov later wrote that during the icons’ stay at headquarters there were no defeats at the front, but on the contrary, only victories were won.

With the first wave of Russian dispersion, the miraculous Peschansky image was transported abroad and soon disappeared.

And yet, at the end of the 20th century, in fulfillment of the will of the Mother of God, a religious procession with the Peschanskaya Icon took place. In the summer of 1999, the Peschansky icon (list) was carried over the expanses of our homeland on an airplane along with other icons, among which was the Sovereign Icon of the Mother of God.

One of the copies of the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God is located in St. Petersburg in the chapel of St. Joasaph of Belgorod at the Children's Infectious Diseases Hospital No. 3 (23rd line of Vasilievsky Island, 16).

Hearing all the people, how faithful to God and You, the Mother of God, Your servant Saint Joasaph, having seen in a dream Your icon, lying in an unknown temple in a weedy place, and the radiant radiance emanating from it, trying with the memory of a wonderful vision to direct his feet on the path of searching for this shrine throughout his vast diocese. When he reached the city of Izyum, he entered the church and saw your icon, the Mother of God, enclosing the coals of the incense in the porch, and he remembered the night vision, and felt the grace emanating from it, fell on his knees, praying before her: forgive, Queen of Heaven, the negligence of your servants, they do not behave, they do wrong. To you, in the tenderness of your heart, cry out this:

Rejoice, diligent Guardian of Your miraculous icons;

Rejoice, Lady of the world, who comforts our hearts with Your Sandy icon.

Like a godly star, people received Your icon from the hands of the saint, trying to build a new temple for God. And there was some discord between its creators for a while: from the afterlife, the deceased wife of a certain rich landowner, appearing three times to her husband in a dream vision, commanded him to leave his stinginess, even for the sake of the destruction of his soul, and build a temple for his wealth. He fearfully accepted the admonition from above, creating a temple in honor of the Ascension of Your Son, Most Pure One, and with a joyful heart he cried out to God: Alleluia.

Ikos 5

Seeing the fulfillment of God's Providence on himself in the discovery of the Peschansky shrine, Saint Joasaph remained in the city of Izyum for three days and three nights, offering thanksgiving prayers in the church at every hour before the Most Pure Image of the Mother of God, for which he was rewarded with a wonderful vision and the voice of hearing: with this icon the Most Holy Lady shows a special sign of His intercession to this city and the whole country, so for the sake of the Mother of God we cry out:

Rejoice, inexhaustible source of peace;

Rejoice, filling our hearts with indescribable joy.

Rejoice, you who do not put to shame those who have hope in You;

Rejoice, you who bestow the power to work miracles on Your icons.

Rejoice, you who do not leave us earthly and cowardly;

Kontakion 10

Wanting to save Your people from many evils, You gave Your icon, Lady, to the blind for sight, for the lame to walk, for the weakened in recovery, for the raging for healing, for the proud for humility, for the unrepentant in repentance, healing for all ailments, evils and sorrows, and diseases expulsion, the establishment of cities, the fruitfulness of the land, for nothing less than earth-born will be able to praise Thee according to the wealth, according to the majesty of Thy mercy towards the human race. Thou art the wall of all those who come running to Thee, O Virgin, always appearing, and to the admirer of Thy icon Ignatius, who had the good intention of visiting the holy city of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, which the Lord sanctified with Thy feet, Thou didst appear as the Helper, when he fell before Thy image, walking on the path Thy blessings and help. But you, the All-Generous One, urgently gave him enough gold through the slave, so that he may fulfill his good desire. With a tender soul he offered You a grateful praise:

Rejoice, blessing of good intentions; Rejoice, thou who instruct us on the path to the Kingdom of Heaven.

Rejoice, thou who admonishes us with saving truth; Rejoice, you guide our life towards piety and chastity.

Rejoice, you who protect us on dangerous paths; Rejoice, you who wisely ward off the temptations of this world.

Rejoice, thou who preservest from the perilous path; Rejoice, you who abundantly bless those who visit holy places.

Rejoice, Lady of the world, who comforts our hearts with Your Sandy icon.

Singing praise and thanksgiving brings to You, Lady, we know what sorrow we bring to Your Son through our apostasies, lack of faith, superstition and other evil faith. We do not cease to pray to You, O All-Merciful One: by Your intercession and intercession before the Throne of God, preserve us in the bosom of the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, so that we may all be one, like the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Let us sing to God in unity of faith: Alleluia.

Ikos 11

As a light-receiving candle, O Lady, You showed Your icon in this city of Izyum, You opened a source of blessed water near the temple of Your Son, where Your miraculous Peschanskaya icon resides, You gave sight to a blind child from it, for which people from that time will receive this good gift for mental and physical benefits. Out of their zeal they cry out to You, the Lady:

Rejoice, strengthening of our lives; Rejoice, healing our infirmities with holy water.

Rejoice, renewing strength to those who draw from it; Rejoice, destroyer of our iniquities.

Rejoice, you who grant healing of ailments to those who accept with faith; Rejoice, inexhaustible storehouse of spiritual treasures.

Rejoice, you who wash away the filth of our uncleanness; Rejoice, you who have preserved the water source to this day with miraculous power.

Rejoice, Lady of the world, who comforts our hearts with Your Sandy icon.

Kontakion 12

Grace always comes, O Most Pure One, from Your Peschansky icon: as an invincible Governor, you drive away unclean spirits against our enemies, visible and invisible, making wise those who are at war with peace and love, punishing the disobedient, uniting family discord with love, instructing the ignorant and unbelievers on the true path shi; We, glorifying Thee, the All-merciful Helper in our life, sing gratefully to God: Alleluia.

We sing from ancient times Your wondrous defense of our Fatherland, when it was plagued by famines and pestilences, fire and devastation, invasions of foreigners and internecine warfare. You, the Lady, have fathers and mothers and little children with tears of help to the proshah, but You, the All-Good One, granted immediate salvation, covering our Fatherland with Your omophorion. We cry out to You, our Deliverer, this thanksgiving and praise:

Rejoice, faithful Guardian of the faithful; Rejoice, right-wing warriors of the Companion.

Rejoice, Guardian of Christian monasteries and all shrines; Rejoice, O prayer book for our Fatherland before God.

Rejoice, Creator of our heavenly Fatherland; Rejoice, in times of invasion of foreigners, our Liberator.

Rejoice, our Nurse in times of famine; Rejoice, you who do not abandon us during disasters.

Rejoice, Lady of the world, who comforts our hearts with Your Sandy icon.

Prayer

O most merciful and most merciful Mother of God, Patroness of our power, and also the Prayer Book for the whole world, accept our hearts of sighing, and hear the kneeling prayers sent to You in the tenderness of our souls, as from ancient times You received the prayers of loving souls here, offered up before Your icon. Help us in defeating the charms and temptations of this world, do not allow us to be rejected by eternal Heavenly bliss. You are our only joy and consolation in this temporary life, You are our hope in Eternal Life. We believe that You, with Your Motherly love and condescension, have worthy us of the longed-for Kingdom of Your Son. We therefore ask you: do not retreat from us, O All-Good One, protect us from all the snares of the enemy, do not allow us to lose God’s mercy through our sins, remove laziness from us in prayer and visiting the temple of God. Deliver us from cowardice, despondency, enmity, anger, suspicion, envy, slander, hatred and demonic pride. Give understanding to those who have trampled the commandments of the Church of Christ. Grant peace and love to our relatives, so that parents and children may live in harmony. May the truth of God be in our country, may pious customs be preserved among our people. Offer, O All-Blessed One, fervent prayers before God for the peace of the whole world, so that the human race will not perish in the flames of worldwide devastation, so that all people will know Their Heavenly Father and You, the Mother of God, the Intercessor of the Christian race. Bring all nations to true repentance and correction of sinful lives, so that we will not be condemned on the day of the Last Judgment of God, but may the Lord vouchsafe us eternal joy in the Heavenly villages, to Him belongs all glory, honor and worship, to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever and ever. Amen.

One of the options for depicting the Most Holy Theotokos is the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God. It is directly interconnected with the history of Russia and is valued by both believers and saints as an example of high iconography. The Peschanskaya icon belongs to the same type of icons along with the Kazan icon, which emphasizes their celebration on the same day. However, they should not be confused, because each can boast of a unique history.

History of the icon

This happened somewhere in the middle of the 18th century. Shortly before his death, the ruling Bishop of Belgorod, Joasaph, saw in a dream the image of the Virgin Mary, who was among all kinds of garbage and in her own words expressed a feeling of strong resentment for the disregard. Later, when the saint of the Russian Orthodox Church was looking around the diocese of the Church of the Resurrection in Kharkov, he found an abandoned, decaying image of the Most Holy Theotokos, which appeared to him in a dream. He reproached the clergy for such careless handling of the shrine and ordered the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God to be placed in the appropriate place. The bishop prayed before the icon for three days and soon the Virgin began to grant healing to those in need of help.

Since then, the sand icon of the Mother of God has more than once helped those who were sick during periods of various epidemics. And during the First World War, the number of deaths began to decline altogether after the arrival of the icon of the Mother of God.

Location of the icon

Until the beginning of the twentieth century, the monastery of the icon was the Holy Ascension Cathedral. The Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God remained in Izyum for a long time, but after that the real shrine disappeared without a trace. Believers saw only copies - lists made from the image of the Mother of God, depicting the Blessed Virgin, so many began to be interested in the question of where the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God is now located. And it’s not surprising, but to this day the original has returned again and is located within the walls of the temple in the city of Izyum, where everyone who prays can turn for help.

The meaning of the Peschanskaya icon

The Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God was of no small importance not only for the entire Russian country, but also for each individual individual. In its image, this icon of the Virgin Mary is similar to the image of the Guide and the Kazan icon. It, like the mentioned icons, means a lot to believers and is a truly miraculous image. In the icon, the Mother of God is represented together with the Child on her left hand. The Mother raises her palm to the Child, while the Son of God holds the book, which contains all knowledge.

How does the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God help?

The Peschanskaya icon is not inferior to other images of the Mother of God in the matter of miraculousness. The icon helps military wives and protects men from all the negativity that befalls a person during times of armed conflicts and wars.

The Peschanskaya icon helps to overcome difficulties in life and various troubles, promotes mental and physical healing, curing believers with serious illnesses.

In addition, the icon is not powerless before those who sincerely pray, facilitating the overcoming of harmful habits, needs and troubles.

Akathist and prayer to the icon

Every week, in the chapel of the Leningrad hospital, which was erected to venerate Bishop Joasaph, services are held, where the akathist to the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God is read. In other cases, it is customary to read the akathist to coincide with festive events, the most important of which is the day of remembrance of the Peschanskaya Shrine. It is celebrated on July 21st.

In addition to akathists, prayers before the icon are valid on this day. It is believed that the icon gains special power and then people who asked for healing and protection from bad weather receive a helping hand. The prayer that should be said when asking is presented below:

Oh, Most Merciful and Most Merciful Mother of God, Patroness of our city of Izyum and our country, and also of the whole world to the Prayer Book, accept the kneeling of our minds and hearts, and hear the prayers sent to You in tenderness of our souls: as from ancient times you received the prayers of loving souls here, before lifted up by Your icon.

Help us in defeating the charms and temptations of this world, do not allow us to be rejected by eternal heavenly bliss. You are our only joy and consolation in this temporary life; You are our only hope in eternal life. We believe that You, with Your Motherly love and condescension, have worthy us with You of the longed-for kingdom of Your Son. We therefore ask you: do not retreat from us, O All-Good One, protect us from all the machinations of the enemy, do not allow us to lose God’s mercy through our sins; remove from us laziness in prayer and visiting the temple of God; deliver us from cowardice, despondency, enmity, anger, suspicion, envy, slander, hatred and demonic pride.

Give understanding to those who have trampled the commandments of the Church of Christ. Grant peace and love to our families, may parents and children live in harmony. May the truth of God be in our country, may pious customs be preserved among our people. Offer, O All-Blessed One, fervent prayers before God for the pacification of the whole world, so that the human race will not perish in the flames of worldwide devastation; may all people know their Heavenly Father and you, the Mother of God, the intercessor of the Christian race.

Bring all nations to true repentance and correction of sinful lives, so that the day of the Last Judgment of God will not be terrible for us, but the Lord will vouchsafe us with You the eternal joy of heaven, and to Him belongs all glory, honor and worship to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit now and ever and forever and ever. Amen.
