Working for many years at school as a biology teacher, and explaining (for the umpteenth time already) to the students of the next ninth grade the features of the structure and functioning of our nervous system, every time I involuntarily caught myself on the same thought, quite “seditious” from the point of view of the theory of scientific materialism.

After all, everything that is known about our nervous system and its functioning is correct and fair only in that specific case, if such a thing as “soul” does not exist at all. If she, the soul, that is, still exists, then ...

Then it turns out that we do not think at all with the neurons of the brain, but with the help of some invisible and intangible substance, which we have long and habitually called the “soul” and whose existence we still doubt. Not all, of course. Sincerely believing people have no doubts about the existence of the soul, but we are not talking about them now. For sincere believers believe without hesitation. I’m talking about people who are trying to somehow, independently and quite consciously understand this difficult issue: is there something in our body, intangible ... or this “something” is not there at all ...

So, what is the "soul" from the point of view of a scientific materialist?

Materialist Explanations

Let's start with a short digression into the distant historical past of mankind, namely the Stone Age. For, according to historians, it was then, at the very dawn of human civilization, that faith in this very soul was born among our distant ancestors. Not knowing how to explain, for example, their own dreams, in which a primitive hunter could not only meet, but even talk with his long-dead friends or relatives, people of that distant time came to the conclusion that during sleep some invisible part a person (soul) can temporarily leave the body and fly somewhere. Well, at least there, where after death all our souls without exception go. It is there that the soul of a sleeping person can meet the soul of his long-dead friend. True, after the awakening of a person, the soul must return, that is, on the contrary: a person awakens precisely because his soul has finally returned. Therefore, it was impossible to wake up a soundly sleeping person too abruptly and hastily, because at that moment his soul may be too far from the body and simply does not have time to return to the body ...

So or approximately so explain the question of the origin of faith in the existence of the soul, scientists-materialists. And for a long time I myself perceived this explanation as the only true one, and it suited me quite well until recently.

And then for some reason it stopped. Not that I suddenly believed 100% in the existence of my own soul ... Rather, I just wanted to figure it out myself. Or at least try to figure it out. And since I am still a biologist by education, I decided to “understand” not from a theological, but from a biological, rather, point of view.

So, is it possible to explain the existence of the soul in the human body without resorting to the help of the supernatural, that is, religion?

In any case, it's worth trying. I'll start from afar.

Information field of the universe

So, in nature there are: a) matter, b) energy fields (there is still a vacuum, but I will not climb into these scientific jungles, so as not to break my neck). Matter is a variety of substances consisting of molecules, atoms or ions. The atoms themselves are also from the category of matter, that's for sure...

But if we take the elementary particles, of which, in fact, these very atoms consist, the question of what these elementary particles are: matter or, at least partially, energy, remains open. Electrons, for example, have the properties of both matter and wave ...

And take the same light energy (visible to us, ultraviolet, infrared - it does not matter). It seems that the luminous flux is the purest energy ... But no! It turns out that a photon, an electromagnetic quantum, the smallest bunch of energy, also has a certain weight (that is why a comet has a “tail”, and this “tail” is always far from the sun), and hence the properties inherent in matter.

Pure energy fields (magnetic field, gravity, etc.) have been studied by science for a long time, but we know surprisingly little about them. In fact, we know almost nothing. But at least we know they exist. A magnetic field, for example, a person can determine with a compass, we feel gravity as our own weight ...

And imagine a certain energy field that we cannot feel either with the help of our own body, or with the help of any ingenious devices, because such devices do not exist at all (at least so far). What can we know about such a field? That's right, nothing... Even if it exists.

But the question is, do such fields exist?

I don't know about the fields, but there is one interesting hypothesis about the Information field of the Universe. Some scientists support this hypothesis, while others (and most of them) reject it completely, but that's not the point. Here I just want to summarize the main provisions of this entertaining hypothesis.

It is assumed that the Universe has a certain single "information field", which contains all the information about the Universe. Well, any person, as a part of the general Universe (its microcosm), must also contain all the information not only about his life, but also about the entire universe (even in in general terms). The only question is that a person himself cannot feel this information in himself (he does not even know about its presence in his body). And only certain people under certain conditions can somehow come into contact with this hidden universal information. Hence, various incomprehensible phenomena: telepathy, clairvoyance, etc.

But let's get back to the Information field of the Universe. And let's recall at the same time another, much more well-known hypothesis: the hypothesis of a pulsating Universe. Based on this hypothesis, our current Universe arose approximately 15-22 billion years ago from a microscopically small point (the "Big Bang" theory), and since then the galaxies formed as a result of this continue and continue to "scatter" in different directions. But this process is not eternal, and after some certain amount of time (measured, of course, in millions and billions of Earth years), our Universe will complete the reverse process: it will begin to gradually shrink to the starting point. After compression to the end point, called the death of the Universe, a new cycle will begin (not immediately, of course), and a new young Universe will arise, which, too, will eventually die, giving way to the next Universe in a row. And so it has always been, and so it will always be... This is the idea of ​​the infinity of time...

I brought the concept of the "pulsating Universe" only in order to somehow connect it with the hypothesis of the Information field of the Universe. What can happen to the Information field of the Universe after its death?

There are two opposing points of view on this.

Based on one of them, along with the death of the next Universe, its entire Information field completely disappears. The new Universe, in this case, begins, as it were, anew, from a "clean slate", so to speak ...

If you believe another point of view, then everything happens exactly the opposite. The information field does not disappear even in the event of the death of the Universe. Moreover, the Information field is eternal, which means that the next Universe remembers its entire prehistory, no matter how long it may be.

You know, I somehow prefer this second point of view. Indeed, in this case, I, as one of the microcosms of the Universe, store in myself information not only about my Universe, but also about billions and billions of universes that existed before.

The prospect is breathtaking!

Biofield

But let us return nevertheless to the question of the soul, more precisely, to the question of its existence or non-existence in our body.

What if in our body there really is some non-material substance that is inextricably linked with our completely material body? And what is it, this substance, is a part of this very eternal and universal Information field?

But allow me, they may object to me, because even if the hypothesis of the Information field of the Universe is true and each of us has its particle, exactly the same particle of this very Information field must be present in each of the living organisms, including the most primitive of them. And in every, by the way, body or object of inanimate nature, this same field must also be present, or rather, its certain particle. Then it turns out that earthworm also has a soul! What about the boulder stone, does it have some semblance of a soul or not? Well, if the size of this soul is directly proportional to the mass of the body itself - what size should the soul be at Mount Elbrus? And Everest? What about the Earth as a whole?

Here we come to one term, which is also very odious from the point of view of traditional physics: "biofield".

When bodies interact without visible contact, physicists usually talk about fields. And. each of these fields has its own force (electric, magnetic, gravitational). Some special biological forces, some special biofield simply do not exist in nature, physicists say ...

What if it does exist? What if we simply cannot catch it yet, without having the right instruments and tools for this? After all, both gravity and, say, magnetic fields, we only learned to capture and determine their presence. We (I do not mean ourselves personally, but all of humanity as a whole) are not able to explain coherently what it is and how it all “works”. For now, anyway.

So, let's not deny, but rather accept, as a hypothesis, the existence of some special biological field, characteristic only for living organisms. And let's try to link together these two concepts: the biofield and the soul.

Two? Or is it still one? But what if the biofield (in the event that it really exists) is the soul? Or vice versa: what if the soul (if a person really has one) is a kind of biofield?

And what is a “living organism” anyway? And what is its main difference from inanimate natural formations?

A LIVING ORGANISM GROWS, you say. Agree. But after all, even an inanimate icicle grows on the roof, and crystals “grow” in solutions in their own way, and people specially grow them there for their own needs.

A LIVING ORGANISM BREATHES AND EATS, and by this it produces energy for its life activity. That's right, but the car "eats" gasoline and at the same time "breathes" oxygen. And his goal is the same as that of the body - the production of energy.

A LIVING ORGANISM REPRODUCES, that is, it produces its own kind. Here, too, one can find an objection, because it is not at all difficult to create automated machines and lines where exactly the same machines would be reproduced.

LIVING ORGANISMS ARE CAPABLE OF MOVEMENT. Not all. Plants and mushrooms are not capable of movement, but "inanimate" cars and motorcycles are moving - and how! (I'm not even talking about airplanes!).

THE COMPOSITION OF LIVING ORGANISMS MANDATORY INCLUDES ORGANIC SUBSTANCES, the basis of which is carbon ...

Well, firstly, the same cars today are made up of a third, or even a half, of organic plastics. And secondly, where is the guarantee that in the vast Universe there is no life, the basis of which is silicon, for example. And if it does not exist, then perhaps silicon life existed in one of the previous Universes ...

And what if we take as the basis of the living ... a biofield? And to formulate the main difference between the living and the non-living as follows: LIVING ORGANISMS HAVE THEIR OWN BIOFIELD.

All! Even unicellular!

And the more complex, the more perfect the organism - the more powerful its biofield. And the most powerful biofield (human) is the soul.

However, with the soul it is not so easy ...

Is it possible that our soul is a biofield plus something else that is inextricably linked with it? Or maybe not so inextricably?

Have you ever thought about how small the probability of the birth of this particular person is. I'm not talking about the fact that his father and mother must definitely meet (but they might not have met!) ...

I mean something completely different. During intercourse, out of hundreds of thousands of spermatozoa, only one merges with the egg! One of hundreds of thousands! That is, in order for this particular person to be born, hundreds of thousands of other people are simply not destined to be born. Hundreds of thousands of individuals are never destined to become such!

And this is only during one sexual intercourse. And if you calculate how many there were for the entire family life from a single family that has two, say, children. Or three, it doesn't matter. Where are the many millions and even billions that could be conceived in one single family? And if we take all of humanity as a whole, over the last, say, a thousand years! Then it's billions of billions of potential human personalities, and not appeared from oblivion ...

Such is the lottery. And then each of us is an extraordinary lucky person, because he is so extraordinarily lucky ...

Or maybe there is no lottery? And this particular person would have been born anyway? Perhaps he would have had a different appearance, gender, even, perhaps, completely different parents ... But it would still be a very specific person with his own personality, with his own "I".

Long time ago, in Ancient China there was an amazing custom. When a woman felt that she was pregnant, her husband sat down so that his face was somewhere at the level of his wife's stomach, and began to tell the unborn child about himself and his wife, about their prosperity, about plans for the future. And it sometimes happened that after such a frank conversation, a woman's pregnancy could simply ... disappear. So, as if the child "changed his mind" to be born in this particular family.

But this did not mean that he could not be born into any other family. A little later, of course. Or much later...

After all, if the Information field of the Universe is eternal, then that small particle of it, which we call the "soul", should not

disappear, even after the disappearance of the host organism. She just needs to find a new host body, that's all ...

I don't think I'm right Eastern religions and the soul of a person after death can "settle" in the body of an animal or plant. I believe that the human biofield can only be in the human body, and not in any other. Though it's possible that I'm wrong...

Especially do not ask how, in what way and at what stage of development of the embryo this happens. I answer honestly: I don't know! And also I have no idea why we don’t remember anything from our previous lives.

However, there are exceptions here. Some fleeting memories happen, especially in childhood. The feeling that what is happening to us has already happened once. Then it passes. But not always and not for everyone ...

Soul and evolution

The following question is also interesting: when, at what stage of the evolution of mankind did people have a soul instead of the usual biofield? At the Cro-Magnon stage? Or already at the Neanderthal stage? Or maybe even earlier? Or are they, these very souls, eternal? In this case, where did they live before, when there was no man on Earth yet?

Maybe in the bodies of some intelligent beings who lived in the previous universe? Or in one of the previous Universes...

However, most likely, the souls of primitive people arose from their own biofields, which suddenly felt their individuality ...

And the biofields themselves?

I would venture to offer readers one of my hypotheses on this score. Perhaps erroneous.

So, let's assume that the simplest biofields arose (they arose precisely from the Information field of the Universe) together with the first, still primitive unicellular organisms. After the death of organisms, such biofields could also simply dissipate in the surrounding space, disappear.

Or maybe not! What if the evolution of living organisms on Earth is the evolution, first of all, of their biofields? And the process of complicating the structure of organisms in the process of evolution is somehow connected precisely (and primarily even) with the accumulation useful information their biofields. And, in the end, some of the biofields felt their individuality, found their own "I". Mind, that is. And it happened already at the stage of the Neanderthal, and maybe even earlier ...

OK then! - will object to me. - Maybe that's what happened. Perhaps our souls have existed since that distant time and pass from one human body to another. But the human population is constantly growing, and at what pace! And if the same Neanderthals were only a few tens of thousands on the entire globe, then there are already six billion of us! And each of us has our own soul. Where did they come from then, these six billion souls? Six billion individuals is now. There will be more in the future...

To answer this question, let's start with another question. Why are we humans so different? I do not mean physical development, everything is clear here from the point of view of genetics. But we differ intellectually, and there is absolutely no pattern observed here.

Why can one person compose poetry or, say, novels, while another cannot do it at all (graphomaniacs do not count)? Why some people are drawn to technology since childhood, while others prefer biology. Or history. Or banking. And someone likes to be a leader ...

About the great writer, artist, musician, we say that he was "given talent." Note: "Dan"! And scientists, after the death of a great man, carefully examine his brain, trying in vain to find the solution to this great mystery there ...

Or maybe a clue in the soul?

When, at the Neanderthal level, the human biofield, until now almost no different from the biofields of all other animals, felt its own “I” and turned into a thinking “soul”, there was, to put it mildly, not enough reason in these first souls. Somewhere at the level of today's mentally retarded people...

And among the Cro-Magnons, our immediate ancestors, the intellectual level was already much higher. Why, you ask?

Is it because those “souls” that lived in them have already changed hundreds, or even thousands of human bodies, and over this considerable period of time managed to accumulate a sufficient supply of useful information for themselves. "Smarted" you might say...

The greater the length of time had to pass the souls of people living today. And here's the clue to talent (this is my hypothesis, of course).

Talented, highly intelligent people are those whose souls have come the longest way of development. And maybe the soul that once lived in Pushkin belonged to Shakespeare or Petrarch even earlier. And Raphael may have harbored the soul of some obscure Stone Age artist, whose works on the walls of Pasco Cave we still admire today.

And the soul of Einstein, perhaps, "lived" before in ... Newton or Leonardo da Vinci. And even earlier - in Archimedes ...

But not everyone can boast of such souls. For most human souls are only a few hundred, or even tens of generations.

Of course, the owners of such souls do not possess high intelligence. But the propensity to violence, it seems, on the contrary, they have. And in a fair amount...

Well, and, of course, at all times (and even now) there were people who did not get a ready soul (because the population increased every year), and therefore the so-called “primary soul” began to form in their body from the biofield "with intelligence at the loss of the same, say, Neanderthals ...

But let us return again to the definition of the concept of "soul". So, we accepted as a hypothesis that the soul is the highest state of the biofield or, rather, some special part of it. A person deprived of this part of his biofield cannot exist.

The spirit makes a person related to the angels, just as the body is related to earthly creatures. People whose mind is completely focused on pressing problems and issues weaken their spirit, drown out his voice - but even so they cannot destroy it.

Does the soul exist scientifically?

Scientists have long tried to ignore the question of whether the human soul exists. As it turned out relatively recently - only in order to confirm its existence and study its properties!

Today, the presence of a soul in a person is confirmed by the results of many studies. For example, a group of German psychologists and doctors, having collected material about the experienced near-death states of about 1000 people of different faiths, gender, age, views on the world and life, confirmed the existence of life after death.

All subjects, with the exception of some minor details, told the same thing: beyond the threshold of death, they felt themselves leaving the body and floating through a white tunnel towards a warm and kind light.

When a person has a soul

The soul has no eternal incarnation. It originates at the moment of conception of a child, grows and develops along with his growing body.

After the birth of a baby, his soul gets acquainted with the world, grows, develops, learns to create and ... destroy.

These words have become part of our vocabulary. Restless soul - what does it mean? The soul, which is doomed to eternal existence without prayerful intercession, the soul is restless, suffering from confusion.

These are the souls of people who died and for various reasons did not have time to receive the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. Restless souls poke in closed doors and the shutters of heavenly dwellings, there is no place for them there, they are like the homeless, without a roof and a shelter.

What is the soul of a person

The Holy Fathers assure that the human soul consists of three forces: reason, feelings and will. The mind, that is, the part responsible for cognition, thinking and expressing in words one's opinion on various issues, is the main part of the soul.

The "mission" of the mind, which it successfully copes with in an unclouded state, is to distinguish good from evil, to know the world - and to indicate to the force of desire (will) in which direction to act, whom to consider friends, whose opinion to listen to.

Emotions are the most difficult to control part of the soul, which only deals with spoiling the “relationship” between the will and the mind, making spiritual growth difficult. That is why it is so important to monitor your emotions, to keep them under control.

Conclusion

Man is a being, one in its duality. Its two halves, body and soul, although they are essentially autonomous entities, are merged into one by the will of God.

Unlike others God's creations, man is an illustration of the law of balance, on which the visible, tangible material world rests.
