Saints with the name Anna in Orthodoxy. Looking into the calendar: the day of the angel Anna. How does the icon of Anna and Joachim help?

Very often, when turning to the icons of St. Anna or with prayer for help and protection, ignorant believers are not exactly sure which Anna they are trying to establish contact with. This leads to prayers going unheard and their faith being questioned. Let's look at all the famous saints with the name Anna, as well as the areas of their patronage.

Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary

The memory of Saint Righteous Anna is dedicated on December 22, August 7 and September 22 according to the new style. Saint Anna comes from the Aaronic family, and her husband, Saint Joachim, comes from the house of King David himself, from where, according to ancient legends, the Messiah was supposed to come. The couple lived in Nazareth and gave a monthly portion of their income to the construction of the temple in Jerusalem, as well as to donations to the poor.

Unfortunately, God did not give the couple children until they were very old, for which the couple grieved unspeakably. It is known that among Jews, childless families are considered the most unfortunate, and infertility is called a grave punishment from God. However, the saints did not give up and fervently prayed for the appearance of offspring. Joachim went to the desert and spent 40 long days there, praying for a miracle, while Anna blamed herself for their misfortune, she also asked the Lord to give her a child, promising to bring him as a gift to God.

The couple's prayers were heard, an angel descended to them and announced that a miracle had happened. Thus, in Jerusalem the couple had a daughter, the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to legend, the holy righteous Anna died in old age in Jerusalem even before the Annunciation. The first church in honor of the saint was built in Devtera, and her Dormition is celebrated on August 7. Prayers to Saint Anne are offered in case of infertility, as well as in case of complications during pregnancy, in order to achieve healthy offspring. Like Saint Anna, Mary, her daughter, began to live a pious life and was honored with the happiness of giving birth to Jesus Christ, our savior.

Princess Anna Kashinskaya

During the time of total atheism, the church was destroyed again, and the source was covered with earth and covered with concrete slabs. However, the sacred water broke through, and the peasants cleared the way for the lake to be returned.

Now, on the site of the lake, a whole bathhouse has been built, with separate cabins for men and women. It is noteworthy that the temperature of the lake does not change, regardless of the time of year. In summer the water does not heat up, and in winter it does not freeze...

in Vilnius

This church is considered a true masterpiece of late Gothic architecture. The small cathedral looks so fragile and miniature that it attracts much more admiring glances than the huge Church of St. Bernard standing behind it. It is not known exactly who built this cathedral and in what period of time, but it looks so dazzling that Napoleon himself wanted to move it to Paris.

Now the famous Church of St. Anne is considered one of the symbols of Vilnius. If you look closely at the main facade of the cathedral, you will find the letters “A” and “M”, which can mean “Ave Maria” or “Anna Mater Maria”. According to some experts, the composition of the facade imitates the Gediminovich pillars, the tops of which are 3 small turrets.

In the 19th century, a bell tower made in pseudo-Gothic style was built next to the church. Now there is a beautiful park near the church, where those who wish can sit in the shade of trees or lie on the grass, enjoying the beauty of the cathedral. Special excursions lasting one and a half or 3 hours are held for tourists, including with Russian guides.

Church in Augsburg

The church, together with a small monastery, was erected in the very center of the city in 1321, after which it was restored and reconstructed many times. Already by 1420, thanks to donations, the monastery of St. Anne doubled its original area. The Jewelers' Chapel was built, and then the Fuggers' Chapel. It belonged to one of the most influential families in the city and was practically the first building in the Renaissance style.

One of the attractions of the church is the Martin Luther Museum. Its history dates back to 1518, when Luther arrived in the city for a theological conversation with the cardinal himself. As a result of this meeting, the papal legate planned to arrest the partisan leader. However, after the meeting, Luther secretly left the city. In 1551, a new history of the temple began, where a school was opened, and then the gymnasium of St. Anne. A short time later, the city architect erected a new building with a library and a church tower with a spire especially for the gymnasium.

Church decorations

In the 16th century, the church became the owner of a unique collection of paintings that can be seen there to this day. Some of the works of art belong to the hand of the great German master Lucas Cranach the Elder. As for the artistic component of the temple’s design, there is something to see here for both pilgrims and ordinary tourists who are not affiliated with the Christian faith. Firstly, you should pay attention to the paintings on the ceiling, made in the Rococo and Baroque styles. Numerous frescoes and stuccoes depict such great events as the Day of Judgment, the Crucifixion and the Sermon on the Mount.

Built entirely from donations, the Chapel of the Goldsmiths was expanded and decorated with frescoes depicting King Herod. In the story, the king turns to the warlocks with a request to find out the whereabouts of Jesus. The frescoes also depict Jesus himself, the Magi, Saints Helen, George and Christopher.

Athonite Monastery of St. Anne

Greece has one of the most popular pilgrimage sites dedicated to St. Anne. The Athos monastery has a miraculous icon that patronizes motherhood. It is known that thousands of people received children after praying in front of the icon, and Saint Anna helped them. The icon has been standing here since ancient times, as evidenced by the ancient lamp with an egg standing near the icon.

It turns out that this lamp was presented to the monastery by the Turkish Sultan more than 200 years ago! The history of this gift is extremely interesting. The fact is that the Sultan of Limnu was childless, and, as mentioned earlier, among Muslims, infertility is like a curse on the entire family. Time passed, the Sultan gradually grew old, but there was still no hope of finding offspring. Then rumors reached him that in the Athos monastery there was a miraculous icon helping parents find children. And the Sultan, without hesitation, sent generous gifts to the monastery with a request to bring him holy water and oil from the lamp.

However, the pilgrims thought: “How can we hand over the shrine to a person who does not even profess Christianity?” And they poured out the oil. However, the Sultan believed in the power of the icon and again demanded that the pilgrims fulfill his request. Confused, the pilgrims went to the monastery fathers for advice. "What do we do? - they asked. “If we do not fulfill the Sultan’s request, he will execute us!” And the fathers answered: “Then take him some simple oil and ordinary water.”

It was decided to do so. Believing in the miraculous power of the icon, the Sultan drank ordinary water from the stream and began to desperately pray, because his last hope was Saint Anna. The icon really helped, and soon a miracle happened: the Sultan received his long-awaited son! Filled with gratitude, the Sultan sent a lamp decorated with a precious stone. However, soon thieves stole the stone, and the Sultan sent a silver egg in its place.

For prayer to gain power...

Many people refuse to believe in God simply because their prayers are not answered. But what if it is the fault of the worshipers themselves? The fact is that very often we are too focused on our own sorrows to give due respect and attention to the greatness of the Lord to whom we are addressing. When we focus only on our own needs, our prayer loses its power. The main condition for the success of any prayer is the love and power of God, who wants to help us.

For prayer to be powerful, we must view it in the light of God’s grace, then we can ascend to Him and the prayer will be heard. Learn to “meet” God in every prayer. After all, we long to meet our loved ones and relatives, but most often we just want something from God. However, God is not like a salesman. He bestows goodness on those who truly believe and long for the presence of the Lord in their lives.

Using the example of the Sultan, one can judge that a person’s religion is not so important as the sincerity of his prayers and motives. Therefore, even if an “infidel” sincerely turns to God and asks for his participation in his life, the Lord will respond to his prayers.

Every day in the church calendar is dedicated to the memory of a saint, often several at once. Name day, or angel day, is a day of veneration of the saint whose name a person received at baptism. The Book of Months is a church book that contains lists of all the days of remembrance of saints. The day of remembrance of a saint is basically the day of his death on earth. In other words, the time of meeting with God, the transition to eternity, what the ascetic strived for. If parents want to name their child, following the strict traditions of the church, then it is necessary to consider the names of those saints whose memory is revered on the 8th day from the birth of the baby.

Anna's Name Day: how to determine

The church calendar can store several days named after the same saint. Also, several saints can have the same name. Therefore, to determine the day of the angel Anna according to the church calendar, it is necessary to find the day of remembrance of the saint with this name, which is closest in date to the person’s birthday. The name that the baby was given at baptism will remain unchanged for the rest of his life, and it will also remain after his death, departure into eternity. It is important to look at other days of remembrance of your angel saint; if there are any, they will be the small day of the angel Anna. The female name Anna has been common at all times, from the ancients to the present. It is translated from Hebrew as “grace.” In the church calendar, the day of the angel, or Anna's name day, is based on 27 saints with this name.

In order to find out when to celebrate a name day, you need to find the day of saints with this name in the church calendar, as already mentioned. But it is worth considering that in the monthly word all dates are presented in the old style. It should also be noted that many of those who died for their faith in Christ suffered during the Soviet years, and were canonized only in 2000. Therefore, if a person was baptized before 2000, then these great martyrs are not among his heavenly patrons.

The Monk Silouan of Athos wrote a lot about prayers to the patron saints. These saints see the deeds and life of the person who bears their name. They are the first to hear people asking for prayers and know about all the sorrows. Saints pray and do not forget about people, so turning to them and honoring them is such an important point. God has endowed them with such grace that with their love they are able to embrace and endow the whole world with goodness. Seeing all the sorrow and suffering of people, they never cease to ask for a person before God.

In order to honor a saint, a person must not only pray to him, but also try to imitate this saint, his faith and deeds. To do this, it is necessary to study his life and exploits. Turn to him through prayers as often as possible, remember and know that in heaven a person has a protector and helper. Name day, the day of the angel Anna, is important in the life of a person with this name. It is imperative to honor the memory of the saint on this day. It would be best to visit church, pray, and light candles.

What can you give?

The best gift on Angel Anna's day will be anything that can contribute to a person's spiritual growth: a vessel for storing holy water, an icon, interesting church candles. A religious book would be a good gift for all times.

The veneration of her memory falls on December 9 (respectively, December 22 according to the new style). The blessed holy prophetess Anna was from the city of Arimathea. Her husband's name was Elkan. He loved Anna very much, but he had to marry Penin because Anna did not bear him any children. Peninnah, on the other hand, bore him several children, so he spent more time with her. Anna was very worried and grieved over her misfortune. But anger did not seize her soul; she constantly prayed and fulfilled the commandments of God. Elkan was also a very religious man. He made a sacrifice to God every year, as he was supposed to. One day, after such a sacrifice, Elkan divided the leftover food among his family. He gave one half to Peninnah and his children, and the other half to his first wife. Peninn was very hurt by this,

her heart was filled with hatred and envy. Anna was very upset by this. She cried for a long time, and her loving husband could not console her. After finishing the sacred meal, the woman hurried to the temple, where, falling to the ground, she began to pour out her sorrow to God. On this day, she made a vow that if God hears her prayers and gives her a child, she will give him to serve the Lord. The whole picture was observed by the priest Eli, who decided that the woman was drunk. Eli approached her and asked her to sober up and then come to this holy place. Anna explained that she was sober, but her soul was grieving and she was pouring out this pain before God. Then Eli gave a blessing and released the unfortunate woman, saying that God would fulfill her request.

And, in fact, the Lord gave Anna a male child, who later became a great prophet, leader and people's chosen one of the people of Israel. The boy was given the name Samuel (asked from the Lord). After Anna breastfed the baby, she and her husband went to Shiloh. They thanked God for the gift and gave the boy to the high priest Elijah so that their son could devote his whole life to God. Eli gave Anna a blessing and said, may God give you many more children. That’s how it was, Anna had 3 more sons and 3 daughters.

She is commemorated on August 3 and 28 (February 16 and September 10 - according to the new style.) Anna the Prophetess was a very righteous and chaste woman whom God endowed with the gift of foresight. After getting married, she lived with her husband for about 7 years and was with him until his last days. After becoming a widow, she never remarried. The woman continued to lead a pious and strict life, observing all the commandments and laws of God. It is known that the Righteous Prophetess Anna, when she was 84 years old, was present in the temple at the meeting of the Savior. Anna prayed all her life day and night, served the Lord and carried her faith to the people, for which God endowed her with the gift of prophecy.

Mother of the Virgin Mary Saint Anna

The memory of this saint is revered on July 25, September 9, December 9 and, accordingly, August 7, September 22 and December 22 according to the new style. The spouses Anna and Joachim were righteous before God and tried to keep all the commandments. They were noble people, but were known more for their humility and mercy. They had a good income, but they spent only one third on themselves, gave the other third to the poor, and donated the rest to the temple. The couple were childless, but they never murmured or complained; they only fervently prayed to the Lord, resigning themselves to his will. One day, during a church holiday, the priest Reuben forbade Jokim to bring a donation to God and expelled him from the temple. He thought that

a childless man is not worthy to make a sacrifice to God. Jokim was very upset and decided not to return to his home. He went into the desert, where he prayed and kept a strict fast for exactly 40 days. When Anna found out about what had happened, she began to ask God to give her a child. Anna believed that she was to blame for their family grief. The woman prayed for a baby and made a vow that if she had one, she would give him to serve the Lord. At that moment, an angel appeared before her and told her the good news that God had heard her prayers and would give her a daughter who would be blessed. The angel came to Jokim with the same news. Soon the blessed child was conceived. They had a daughter, who was named Maria. This is how the Blessed Virgin Mary was born.

In Orthodoxy there are a considerable number of righteous examples of married couples. These people, the lives they left behind, show believers many positive qualities, an example to be followed. The icons of these saints enjoy sincere veneration. These include the icon of Joachim and Anna, a married couple of parents of the Mother of God.

Many believers still turn to these saints in prayer so that they can intercede with the Almighty.

History of the Righteous

Joachim and Anna can bless married couples and people who are looking for a stronger relationship or improvement in a relationship. However, in order for the prayer before the icon to be more thoughtful, it is useful to consider the lives of these saints. Thanks to the understanding of this story, the meaning of the icon of Joachim and Anna is revealed to believers.

So, the story begins in the city of Nazareth, which was located in Galilee. There lived a married couple, righteous and respectable, but Saint Anna (mother of the Virgin Mary) could not conceive for a long time. By the way, this is why now the icon with her is often used by women who want a child.

Her husband could leave a woman who was not giving birth, such were the laws of that time. Moreover, childbirth was considered the basis of marriage; if a child did not appear, they looked for another spouse.

However, the couple lived together and continued to expect a miracle. They were great righteous people and at the same time had high incomes, enjoyed a position in society, but suffered due to the absence of a child, many people condemned this fact. Then Joachim went into the desert to fast and pray to the Lord, and Saint Anna prayed in her house.

Miraculously, angelic visions appeared to them and both of them, without saying a word, went to Jerusalem, where Anna the Righteous conceived a child, the icon can describe this fact - the miraculous meeting of the spouses there. In Catholicism, the conception of the Mother of God is also considered immaculate, but this fact was approved only in the 19th century by the Catholic Church by decision of the Roman Pontiff.

Of course, in Orthodoxy this conception is not considered immaculate, it was completely earthly, but the very fact of the birth of a child from a childless couple, and such a special one, is, of course, a miracle.

Moreover, the fact of the miracle is confirmed by biographical data. If you look at the icons of St. Anne and Joachim, the advanced age of these people becomes noticeable. By the time Mary was born they had reached at least seventy years of age. As it is not difficult to understand, bearing and giving birth to a child at such an age without the grace of God is a very difficult task; even modern civilization with all the achievements of technological progress cannot provide conditions for such aged women in labor.

How does the icon of Anna and Joachim help?

Most often, these saints are approached on topics related to marriage and family relationships, asking the Lord to help give them a child or improve their family life. In general, about everything somehow related to family and harmony in the home.

In many ways, the icon of Righteous Anna, the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a symbol of female humility and endurance. After all, Anna had to endure a lot in those distant times when a woman was valued mainly by having children. Just imagine how hard it was for her throughout almost her entire earthly journey, but she did not lose faith and continued to pray, thanks to which she received an incredible miracle.

By the way, there are other images with this name that speak of female humility and endurance. We are talking about the icon of Anna the prophetess - she, too, throughout her earthly existence, prayed a lot and worked hard, thanks to which she received the gift of prophecy and testified about the coming of Christ. In turn, Anna the Martyr, who is in many churches and is also called the icon of Agnes the Martyr, lived in Rome during the period of persecution of Christianity, but did not abandon the faith even in the most difficult times.

Prayers to icons

In the Orthodox tradition, when baptizing a person, it is customary to endow him with the name of a saint, which is written in the calendar - a list of names of saints revered by the church. If the girl is called Anya, then the day of the angel falls on the day of remembrance of this saint. “Your life will be according to your name,” says the priest during the ceremony. You should figure out what this name means, as well as when Anna’s name day takes place according to the Orthodox calendar.

The name Anna comes from the Hebrew word "Hannah", which translated into Russian means “mercy” and “grace”. This name is also found in the Old and New Testaments, and if we talk about translation from the ancient language, then in this case its meaning has several versions: “merciful”, “spiritual”, “active” and others.

In later times, the name meant "fertile" and "divine", associated with the goddess of the earth, fertility and love. In ancient Roman mythology its meaning is “forever young”, i.e. goddess of the new coming year, which is celebrated on March 15.

There is an opinion that the owner of his name receives a heavenly intercessor, who in some way influences the fate of a person, and in the science of names - onomastics - it is believed that each name leaves a special imprint on the life of its owner, therefore, knowing the name of a particular person, you can familiarize yourself with a brief description of his personality.

Anya fully lives up to the meaning of her name. She is beautiful, smart, harmonious and very active. Her main qualities are empathy and kindness. But unfortunately, they bring few positive moments into a girl’s life, since many people take advantage of these qualities, even taking into account the fact that their owner is well aware of it. She cannot resist such barbarism in any way, because Anya quickly becomes attached to people and literally after a couple of weeks, her acquaintances become close friends for her, for whom she can do anything.

As a child, little Anechka is a rather calm girl, she does not bother her parents with their whims, she loves everything beautiful, she is an excellent artist, she tries very hard at school, actively participates in the life of the class and happily carries out any instructions from adults. In her youth, a girl imagines herself as the heroine of romantic books or films about love, enjoys authority among her peers and can charm almost every boy.

The owners of this name are sacrificial and take life quite seriously. They rarely think about their own instability, because they think more about the welfare of other people and, sacrificing their own needs, are more likely to rush to realize the dreams of friends or relatives than their own. To find happiness in her personal life, it is important for Anya to find a man with an easy outlook on life, who will be sincere and caring towards her.

These girls are wonderful wives, very tolerant people and the best housewives. They do not attach much importance to a man’s appearance, so it often happens that beautiful owners of this name choose a man with a not entirely remarkable appearance as their life partner.

An interesting difference in character develops between girls born, for example, in summer and winter. If Anya’s date of birth falls in the summer, then she is a soft, flexible and compliant girl; Ani, born in winter, are determined, firm and confident in their convictions.

Ani differs from other girls in her willpower and insight, however, she is sometimes suspicious and cynical. Not the most pleasant trait of their character is the desire to keep everything under control. But this does not prevent them from easily finding a common language with others, solving the most complex problems and looking at things soberly. These girls often choose creative professions and do not like boredom and monotony.

Anya is sincere, sincere and merciful. This girl is ready to run to the aid of anyone, so you shouldn’t escalate the situation too much when communicating with her, she already sees when she needs to help.

The celebration of Anya's name day is a thanksgiving to the saint on Anna's day. On what date this should be done is not an easy question, since there are many saints with that name. This is the name of the Russian empress and daughter of Yaroslav the Wise, as well as the mother of the Virgin Mary and many others. Many beautiful, intelligent and great women glorified this name and were canonized, so all the days of their memory are essentially considered name days.

According to the church calendar, Angel Anna's Day falls on twenty-eight days a year. All these 28 days for the Orthodox woman and the owner of the most popular name are name days, however, among them it is worth highlighting the holiday with the date on which her patron saint is venerated. As a rule, this is the closest date of memory of the saint after the girl’s birthday. This day will be considered a big name day, and the rest of the dates will be considered small ones..

How to celebrate angel day

Name days began to be celebrated in the 17th century. On this day, it is customary for an Orthodox person to be closer to his patron and God. It is recommended to visit church, confess and receive communion. You should not treat the holiday as the most important event in your life and indulge in excess. It is enough for family and friends to congratulate the person, say a few kind words and give gifts as a sign of attention.

In the pre-revolutionary period in Russia, on Angel's Day they baked pies, birthday rolls and loaves, and distributed them to friends and neighbors. In addition, on the day of the celebration, the birthday boy and his loved ones went to church, where everyone lit candles for health and venerated the icon with the face of the patron saint, after which relatives were invited to share a meal and spent time at the festive table in a family and quiet atmosphere.

Traditional food options

Among the dishes of Russian cuisine on name days, many pies with filling, fruits and drinks were served. If these were royal feasts, then on the birthday boy’s table, in addition, one could see rare varieties of seafood and meat products. However, the church does not accept such an attitude towards the celebration of name days and advises on this day to think about your faith and about God. Therefore, it is not necessary to set a rich table; you can prepare dishes such as:

  • vareniki;
  • pies (with meat, fish, vegetables);
  • pancakes with curd;
  • pies;
  • personalized loaf;
  • sweets;
  • beverages.

But if the name day falls during Lent, it is advisable to move the festive meal to another day and celebrate the day of the angel after Easter or celebrate the name day with exclusively Lenten dishes.

The name Anna has been popular for many centuries, it was used to call empresses, queens and commoners. The patron saints of this name are women - great martyrs, who for their deeds during earthly life were canonized and included in the calendar.

Among them:

According to Orthodox custom, the patron saint of Ani is considered to be the Venerable Anna, who is the mother of the Most Holy Theotokos, because her story is unique.

Anna and her husband Joachim, who came from the royal family of David, lived together for more than twenty years and at the same time remained childless. But when the couple spent forty days in prayer, an angel came to them with the good news that they would soon have a daughter, about whom many would know. And so it happened, because the glory of the Most Holy Theotokos does not fade even now.
